Baseball team travels to Tennessee over spring break

The Revere High School men’s baseball team traveled over spring break for four days to participate in a baseball tournament.

Seventh grade science teacher Jason Cottrell has lead the team as the head coach for seven years. This is the second year in a row that Cottrell has taken the team to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the tournament. Cottrell shared why he decided to take the team down to Chattanooga for the second year.

“Weather [helps our games], we played four games in Chattanooga, where it rained all week up [in Ohio] and we would only have played maybe one game, [plus] the average temperature is around 70 degrees [in Chattanooga],” Cottrell said.

Cottrell described how the Minutemen played while they were down in Chattanooga.

“We played four games; we went 1-2-1. We beat Hixson TN 4-1, lost to Lexington AL 19-15, lost to Aurora Central Catholic 19-3, and tied Next Level Academy AL 4-4 due to a time limit on the games,” Cottrell said.

Junior and captain Charlie Fink went down to Chattanooga for the baseball tournament. Fink shared how he thought the team was able to improve because of the trip.

“We saw more live pitching, and were placed in live situations that other teams in Northeast Ohio did not get to see,” Fink said.

Senior and captain Jared Baumgardner went down to Chattanooga the past two years. Baumgardner explained how the team paid for the trip.

“The team had a fundraiser in the fall and winter which raised enough money for the each player to go to Chattanooga and not have to pay for anything,” Baumgardner said.

Baumgardner shared what his most memorable part about going to Chattanooga.

“The most memorable part of the trip to me was playing games in the nice weather and getting a big victory against a team from Tennessee,” Baumgardner said.

The seniors on the baseball team this year include: Jared Baumgardner, Logan Bergh, Nicky Gutierrez, Shane Levermann, Nick Pengal, Marc Solis, Alex Uhrich. The team record currently is 5-15-1 and they play their next game on May 4 at Barberton High School.
