Wrestling team prepares for upcoming season

The Revere wrestling team started the 2017-2018 season in early November and  is looking forward to a season full of  victories and championships.

Although the first official practice, held on November 3, started the season, some of the boys took it upon themselves to train in the gym this off-season during the summer. Coach Dan Mosher from the math department, head coach for nine years, explained what official practices look like.

“Practices usually consist of a lot of technique drilling, hand fighting, and then live wrestling.  We also have hard 30 minute conditioning workouts 2-3 days a week.”

Junior Ethan Depp explained how they arranged extra practices.

“Every Friday during football season some of the guys would group up and do conditioning and things like that to stay in shape for the season,” Depp said.

Senior captain Jack Baker also spoke about the work he puts in practices to achieve his goal of placing at the state tournament.

“To achieve my goals, I’ve been to many off-season camps such as the Jordan Camp and wrestled at offseason tournaments. During the season, I keep the intensity in the practice room at a high level, and I watch film after practice,” Baker said.

This year, the boys have their own individual and team goals. Senior captain Ian Weiland would personally like to make it to districts, and Depp has the goal of making it to states this year. Weiland’s team goal is to make it to the state tournament. Coach Mosher has his own ideas for the team this year. He would like to see his team succeed in multiple areas including winning .750 % in dual meets, winning top 3 in the American Division of the Suburban League, having 8-10 district qualifiers, and 1-3 state qualifiers.

All boys spoke about putting in the work and facing hardships to achieve their goals. Depp further explained some of the difficulties of wrestling.

“[To make my weight class] I had to cut down my eating and cut out bad eating habits throughout the season.. I could not eat things like junk food,” Depp said.

Throughout the difficulties the team has faced, the boys agree that wrestling has helped them both socially and with their school work .

“Wrestling has instilled a diligent work ethic into my life in school and in other activities. I have also made many great friends on the team,” Baker said.

Weiland also spoke on how wrestling has positively affected him in the classroom.

“I think wrestling has helped me academically because it has taught me to work hard in life which I apply to my studies,” Weiland said.

Depp also believes wrestling has helped him academically.

“I think if people are in shape they do better in school, and it helps relieve stress instead of worrying about the struggles in school,” Depp said.

Of all the winter sports from which to pick, the boys explained why they love to wrestle and what it feels like when they conquer the win.

“[As a captain] I always try to work hard in practice and I encourage the underclassmen to do the same. Wrestling is by far the best sport to win because you are the only one responsible for the win,” Weiland said.

Baker also spoke on the positive effects of being a wrestler and why he chose this sport.

“I chose wrestling because it is the one sport where I can choose my own destiny and success. I don’t have to rely on a team to be successful.” Baker said.

Depp also loves wrestling for the pay off each wrestler feels once they win.

“The reason why I love to wrestle is because getting your hand raised at the end of the match feels like you just dominated the other dude and you just feel physically better and stronger. All the hard work paid off,” Depp said.

Senior wrestlers include Michael Amentini, Jack Baker, Garrison Beale, Beckett Fant, Stefan Farian, Parker Fergason, Max Klein and Ian Weiland. Captains for the season are seniors Jack Baker, Stefan Farian, and Ian Weiland. Seniors Elizabeth Kelly and Jessie Spann help record stats for the season.

The next Varsity match is the North Coast Classic Tournament on Friday the 8th and Saturday the 9th at Independence High School.
