Women’s basketball holds confidence in approaching season

The developing Revere High School women’s basketball team has prepared for the upcoming regular season through a summer camp and constant practice on the court.

Emily Brock, a senior Varsity player who will be continuing her athletic and academic careers at Ohio Northern University, explained some of the team’s goals for the season, and mentioned personal things she does to help herself and the team.

“We want to win the Suburban League and make as far in the State tournament as possible. . . . I play basketball year round and give 100 percent effort in practice and games. I am very competitive, and I do not like to lose, so I push myself and the team everyday to work hard,” Brock said.

The Junior Varsity and Varsity teams both went to a two-day camp at the University of Findlay where they played in ten games. Viktoria Farian, a senior Varsity player, talked about what the team learned from the camp and what the team needs to work on.

“[As a team] we just need to work on effort and challenging each other constantly. Also, giving 100 percent all the time and being consistent. . . . It was a really big team bonding experience, and that is what I think it was meant for, as well as getting to play with each other, so most people liked it,” Farian said.

The Varsity team finished 7-2 at the camp. Salwa Najjar, a Revere junior on Varsity, talked about personal things she does to help herself and the team, and she spoke about her favorite part of basketball.

“I try to communicate with my teammates on and off the court, and I think establishing friendships will really help us get to where we want to go. . . . Basketball forces me to have confidence in myself and that leads to my overall confidence,” Najjar said.

Kevin Verde, a Revere Middle School social studies teacher and nine-year girls Varsity basketball coach, mentioned that there are four seniors this year, so the team is filled with underclassmen. Juniors Salwa Najjar and German exchange student Jana Drawert will be asked to lead and play major minutes. Sophomores Jess Vari, Grace Hete, Anna D’Amico, and Taylor Rinn make up the underclassmen core. Verde also spoke about some upcoming tournaments.

“Every girls basketball team in the state gets a chance to compete in the OHSAA State Tournament at the end of the year. We will also be playing in the Walsh Jesuit Holiday Tournament” Verde said.

Lastly, Verde mentioned what he is personally looking forward to this season.

“I’m looking forward to our four seniors putting their stamp on the program’s history. For years they have been in the shadows of the class that just graduated. It is their turn now to do something for their team and their school. Emily Brock, Alexa Langenfeld, Viktoria Farian, and Kaila Sense are ready for the challenges that they will face,” Verde said.

The team’s first game is at home on November 30 at 7:30 pm against North Royalton.
