Revere family aids tennis program

One Revere family, with years of tennis experience, maintains strong involvement in the Revere High School men’s tennis program.

The Kumar family has participated in tennis for years; beginning with the 2015-16 spring season, they have all become a part of the men’s tennis program.  Senior Bharat Kumar and freshmen Ram and Raj Kumar compete, while their father, Senthil Kumar, has started his first year of coaching the team.

Bharat explained when and why he began playing tennis.

“I started playing when I was three, so [I have been playing for] fourteen years. . . .  My dad started taking me to practices when I was little and as I kept putting in more time, I got better and began enjoying it,” Bharat said.

Bharat mentioned his plans to pursue tennis in college.

“I’ll be attending [The Ohio State University].  Depending on my schedule, I might walk on, however, I did not want to commit in case my schedule was too busy,” Bharat said.

Senthil explained why he decided to get his sons involved in tennis at a young age.

“[My family is] very passionate about tennis.  I started playing in India where there was not a lot of good coaches.  My sons were very young when I exposed them to the sport.  Tennis teaches you life lessons, so I thought I would give them that experience as well,” Senthil said.

Senthil also stated why he decided to coach and voiced his goals for this season.

“The whole aspect of coaching is a very rewarding experience.  Three of my own sons are now on the team, so I decided it was time to get myself into the program. . . I am very excited about this season and the next couple of years as well.  [I want to] help take one of the players to states which is a very big achievement at this level,” Senthil said.

Raj shared his thoughts on his dad becoming a coach.

“I am incredibly excited that my father can be a part of our program.  It provides me with comfort at having a familiar face coaching me and helps us bond further since he can guide me as well as tracking our progress as a team,” Raj said.

Ram explained the effect tennis has had on his life and what he finds most rewarding and most degrading about tennis.

“It plays a pretty big and important part of my life, it teaches me life lessons that will help me in the long run. . . What I really like most is winning, my least favorite [part] is playing poorly and losing,” Ram said.

The Revere Men’s Tennis team has a current record of 10-4.
