Women’s basketball team wins league title

The Revere High School women’s basketball team has not won a championship since 1975. The team has excelled under the leadership of the senior class and the playmaking abilities of underclassmen. Under head coach Kevin Verde, the team experienced one of the best seasons in his coaching career. They finished the 2015-2016 season by becoming the American League Division champions.

The Revere High School women’s basketball team is 2015-2016 American Division champions. They beat Barberton 48-44 at Barberton High School, solidifying themselves as solo Suburban League Champions.

Verde explained his coaching philosophy throughout the season.

“When you have good players, I think your coaching philosophy should be ‘do not screw it up’, that was kind of the approach. When you have a Division I scholarship recipient like Camryn Brown, who’s basically a coach on the floor, and Emily Brock and Viktoria Farian, [who are] both very skilled basketball players… They have done most of the work themselves. They have developed themselves into great basketball players, so it’s easy to put them in positions to succeed,” Verde said.

The team worked through multiple injuries this year. Brown, a senior point guard, explained the effect the injuries had on the team.

“The team had a lot of injuries this year. [Caitlyn] Vari tore her ACL in July of 2015 and was out at the beginning of the season. I broke my hand in a preseason scrimmage. Then our freshman post player Grace Hete tore her ACL at the beginning of the season. Vari returned to play mid-season then tore her ACL again. It was unbelievable,” Brown said.

Only a junior, Emily Brock was awarded First Team All-League. Brock mentioned why she is going to miss this year’s seniors.
“I am really going to miss the seniors especially playing with my sister Abby. We were all very close and wanted the same goal. We were always on the same page to win the Suburban League title. We would compete against each other in practices and worked very hard,” Brock said.

Brown and Brock both got First Team All-League, Farian was Second Team All-League and Alyssa Nicholas was Honorable Mention. The team finished the 2015-2016 season with the title American Division champions. They entered the state tournament with a record of 13-9. They lost first round against Laurel 42-28.
