The Revere High School Varsity girls’ volleyball team ended their season by winning the Suburban League for the first time in 38 years.

The Varsity team finished their regular season with a record of 20-2 and achieved a record of 13-1 in the Suburban League. RHS math teacher and head Varsity coach Jenna Repp has been coaching volleyball at Revere for two years and is aided by assistant Varsity coach Gina Hartranft. Repp spoke of the team’s goals for this season.

“Our goal from day one has been to win the Suburban League title, something we haven’t done since 1976 and to go as far as possible in the state tournament. We want to be playing our best volleyball in sectionals [as well],” Repp said.

Senior captain and Varsity outside hitter Stephanie Bierman has been playing volleyball at Revere for six years. She voiced some of the team’s other goals.

“We would like to win districts and move on to regionals during [the] post-season,” Bierman said.

One of the Varsity team’s achievements this season was their defeat of Wadsworth, who has won the Suburban League title for the past four years, both at home and away. The girls’ victories broke the opposing team’s 58-0 record in the Suburban League. Ali Boehnlein, middle hitter and senior captain for the team, has also been playing volleyball at Revere for six years. She explained her reaction to beating Wadsworth.

“It was incredible finally beating Wadsworth, especially as a senior. Also, being so close to winning in the past made it that much better,” Boehnlein said.

The Varsity team went on to defeat Copley 3-0 on October 9, securing their position as Suburban League champions. Repp explained her response to the team’s victory.

“I am so proud of these girls. All of their hard work has paid off. It has been 38 years since we won a league title, [and] I couldn’t be more proud that we won it this season. They are truly a special group of players,” Repp said.

The team practices for two hours every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and has games on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Eley, setter and senior captain of the team, has been playing volleyball at Revere since seventh grade. She described what a typical practice consists of.

“We do ball control drills and conditioning in the beginning, [and] then we do skill-specific drills. At the end, we scrimmage each other,” Eley said.

Eley also voiced her favorite aspect of playing volleyball.

“My favorite aspect of playing volleyball is playing in the really hard and intense games. It’s such an exciting feeling to play in those games. I also love getting close with my teammates,” Eley said.

Boehnlein defined the affect that the support from the students in the stands has on the games.

“It makes playing so much more fun with tons of fans cheering us on,” Boehnlein said.

The Varsity team contains seven seniors, including Bierman, Boehnlein, Demi Boyazis, Eley, Mandi Fink, Natalie Lewis and Nicole Mandalfino. This year’s volleyball season began on August 1, 2014 and ended with a loss against Padua Franciscan High School, naming them District runner-ups.
