Students participate in Powderpuff tournament

Revere High School held its annual Powderpuff football tournament, which invites students in each grade to participate in some way.

This year Student Council partnered with Project Love. Student Council Adviser Jenny Kirchner explained what money they give to Project Love and who could participate in Powderpuff football.

“For every student that participates, Student Council donates $5 from their fund to Project Love, and this year Project Love is going to fund Strong Teens activities. The students that participate get a bandana the color of their shirt. . . . Only girls can play, but boys can participate by reffing, cheering, or coaching. Anyone can come and watch; lots of parents come,” Kirchner said.

Senior coach Andrew Boyazis commented on the day’s activities.

“The seniors play the freshmen and the juniors play the sophomores in the first round. Winners then play each other in the championship and the losers play for third place. The games are an hour long,” Boyazis said.

Kirchner described the Powderpuff tournament.

“It is just a fun fall school activity where the girls get to be competitive in flag football, and it is a friendly competition between the different grade levels. The boys football team usually are the referees and the coaches, so it is really just a great community activity to have some fun outdoors. . . . We had more students than ever this year probably by double. We are going to see if we can add in a few more games, so everyone gets enough time to play,” Kirchner said.

Student Council President Becca Fisher explained the teams.

“We have the four teams for each grade, and we have football players coach each of the grades,” Fisher said.

Boyazis has been a Powderpuff coach since his freshman year. He described his experience as a coach and what the team’s goal was.

“It is a lot of fun watching the girls play. It is amazing how people you would not guess would be very good at football turn out to be great. . . .  Most of all the goal is to win and crush the spirit of all the opposing teams,” Boyazis said.

In the United States and Canada, Powderpuff football games are flag football games between girls from freshman to senior classes. The term originates from the powder puff, the soft material used for the application of cosmetic face powder. Funds from the ticket and concession sales for the game typically go to charity, the senior class, or to a dance.

Senior player Lydia Butler gave her perspective before the tournament.

“You can definitely expect to see the seniors crush it! I heard that the freshmen will be pretty easy to beat and that the juniors do not have a team but, the sophomores on the other hand are the team to beat and not going to lie, I am scared! I am also very excited to play powder puff this year! I am the quarterback, and we have some pretty solid running backs so it will be interesting,” Butler said.

The Powderpuff football tournament took place on November 4 at 1 pm.
