NHS hosted staff versus student sports games

The National Honor Society hosted a sports events assembly at which students can compete against their favorite teachers in games of volleyball and basketball.

Matthew Giltner, the NHS president and a student who played in the most recent games, expressed his feelings on playing against his teachers.

“It’s always fun to have an opportunity to step out of the classroom and play your teachers in something,” Giltner said.

Jeff Fry, a teacher who played against the students in the most recent year, talked about his experience with the staff vs. student games.

“I always say ‘yes’ when asked to play because the seniors deserve to play against their high school teachers (as opposed to coaches and teachers from RMS). It is also fun running the floor with colleagues from the different departments, or getting a set from great volleyball players like Mrs. Gillette. At some point, I will be “too old” to play, but as long as Mr. Evans dons the vintage striped pants, I will feel young enough to participate,” Fry said.

Fry also explained why he thinks the games are an important part of students’ senior year.

“It is a positive teacher/student opportunity for interaction. It is the unofficial beginning of the end for the seniors. After the senior-faculty game, we have spring break, delayed starts for testing, senior AIR tests, AP tests, etc. It is special because seniors get to participate in something that is ‘just for them’,” Fry said.

The adviser for NHS, Jason Milczewski described the purpose of the games.

“It’s a fundraiser. All of the proceeds go to the Akron food bank, so it’s one of NHS’s service projects that we do,” Milczewski said.

Milczewski also added how the program hosts other fundraisers.

“We go to the food bank, a lot of it is centered around that. We are thinking of doing a backpack fundraiser in the future, we did a book drive in the past. We’ve done various things, a couple every year. The staff vs student game is sort of a staple,” Milczewski said.

Giltner added why he signed up in the games to play against the teachers.

“I really wanted to beat them. It didn’t go according to plan, but it was a blast,” Giltner said.

The games will be hosted again next year with the current juniors playing against the teachers.
