Knitting gains more popularity with student help

A student has decided to start a new knitting club at Revere High School with the help of the administration and fellow knitters in the school.

Sophomore Paige Mesecar took up knitting two years ago after learning from her grandmother; she crocheted before that. She was inspired to start the club to teach others how to knit since it is a relaxing hobby she enjoys. She detailed her hopes for the club, as well as how it initially formed.

“People can join to learn how to knit, to practice knitting, or to work on projects to be donated to charity. I found out during marching band that Mrs. Rizzo knits, and I have asked her advice on some of my own projects. When I asked her to supervise a knitting club, she agreed and has been helping me start it,” Mesecar said.

Revere High School assistant band director and club adviser Katie Rizzo expressed her enthusiasm for the creation of this club.

“I am very excited to be the adviser of this club, so I can assist students with their knitting or crochet projects and maybe learn some new skills myself. I have been knitting for five years, and my mother taught me the skills. I think it is a wonderful idea to come together over a hobby that is enjoyable, relaxing and beneficial to the community. I also believe that donating the finished projects to charity is very kind and generous of the students involved,” Rizzo said.

Sophomore Sasha Desberg, who has been knitting for three years, discussed the kinship she hopes the club will cultivate.

“I heard about the club when Paige first had the idea, back when it was just a couple of our friends who wanted to meet up to knit. I want to have a community of knitters who can help with projects or who want to learn to knit,” Desberg said.

Mesecar has met with high school principal Phil King to discuss the club’s goals, purpose and meeting arrangements. Though the formal name of the club is simply “Knitting Club,” Mesecar herself favors “Knit Wits.” The club welcomes new members of all knitting skill levels and hopes to schedule its first official meeting soon. Meetings will be held in room 200 until 3:30 on Wednesdays.
