Chess club hopes to win Regional Championship

The Revere Local School District’s Chess Club will continue to practice in hopes of winning the Regional Championship.
Chess Club began working in late October will continue playing until late February. Team member and senior, Tyler Cai explained when the meetings take place.

“Chess Club generally starts in late October and goes until late February and usually meetings are held Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:00 to 5:00,” Cai said.
Cai helps to supervise other members at meetings. Cai explained what happens at meetings.

“If you get to the room early, you can start playing chess,” Cai said.
Freshman Chess Club member, Patrick Guerreau talked of what goes on at matches.

“You learn new things and you move up in rankings,” Guerreau said.

Cai also mentioned the ranking system.

“If someone wants to advance they can play other people and you must win 2/3 games,” Cai said.
Chess club adviser and science teacher Eugene Sawan said that students are not required to attend and that most members attend meetings to “have fun.”

The team is comprised of both high school and middle school students. Cai commented on the system used instead of tryouts.

“We use a ranking system in the club to be on the team so there are no formal tryouts,” Cai said.

Select elementary school students also participate in the club. Cai also mentioned that all the students are transported to the high school.

“After school middle school students come to the high school and elementary kids ride a bus,” Cai said.

Chess club meets in Sawan’s classroom from 2:37 to 5:00 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
