RHS Student Council holds annual canned food drive

Revere High School Student Council worked to beat their goal of 3,000 cans during its annual canned food drive.

Each year through the canned food drive student council aims to aid families in need in the Revere Local School District as well as donate to regional food banks. They hoped to exceed last year’s count of 2,000.

RHS Student Council president Miranda Koewler spoke about her goals.

“We had a goal of 2,000 to 3,000 cans last year, but of course it would be nice to see more being donated this year,” Koewler said.

The food drive benefits local families in a confidential and discreet manner. King described how this is done.

“[Secretary Claudia] Sarcyk and I collect names of families that we know are in need, call them up very confidentially and let them know when they can pick things up,” RHS Principal Phil King said.

The families receive their food first, and the surplus is then shipped to regional food banks, such as the Summit County Food Bank, where it further benefits hungry families.

RHS Student Council vice president Julie Garcia explained that the drive does have its obstacles, however.

“It’s hard to get people motivated to donate,” Garcia said.

In addition to the parties, Garcia donates to show that she personally helps with the drive. Garcia explained another way that Student Council hopes to motivate students to give.

“[Student Council] tries to do fun things like parties for winning classes to make people want to give,” Garcia said.

King elaborated on the challenges that he has faced in the past.

“I know that Student Council tends to struggle a little bit with [transporting donations]. So, if there are those that would like to fill their pickup truck or van to take food down, I’m sure a lot of people would be very happy,” King said.

The drive ran from Monday, November 17 through Friday, November 21. Cans were collected in first period classes, culminating in a total of 3511 collected cans. The class with the highest number of donated cans will receive a breakfast provided by administration. Second and third place classes will receive donuts provided by Student Council. In addition to the collection bins, the main office also collected cans.
