Teacher, student volunteers offer tutoring and test prep

An RHS teacher, with the assistance of student volunteers, has started a formal tutoring program after school in the library. Elizabeth Long, the program coordinator, is an experienced tutor.

“I began tutoring students outside of school in 2005.  I taught a formal ACT prep class and worked individually with students to help them with concepts from their classes,” Long said.

Long enjoys tutoring, and says her years of teaching have helped her become a better tutor.

“I enjoy helping students learn.  Any time I can help a student achieve that ‘Aha!’ moment, I am excited.  My varied background helps me tutor a variety of subjects, so I feel I can provide a range of assistance to students needing help,” Long said.

Long is not offering tutoring help on her own, because senior Megan Mortimer tutors students with Long in her spare time.

“I tutor mostly for Spanish, because I know kids can have a tough time grasping the language,” Mortimer said.

Mortimer also mentioned the varied amounts of time she spends with students, and how it is different for everyone.

“How long I spend with a student really depends on what a student needs, I tutor some students all year or sometimes no more than a month, if they just needed help with minor things,” Mortimer said.

Mortimer talked about how rewarding tutoring has been for her, and how much she has enjoyed helping students.

“I like to see the lightbulb go off, and hear [the student] say ‘Oh, I really understand this now’,” Mortimer said.

Nick Hennigin, a student who receives math help, thought  his tutoring experience was very beneficial.

“My experience was very positive; they really do a great job tutoring. They don’t just give you the answers, they really try to help you understand the material,” Hennigin said.

Lu Li, a Revere student getting ACT help from Long, also thought her tutoring experience was very positive.

“I think [the] tutoring will really help me get a better score on my ACT,” Li said.

The library is open for tutoring on weekdays, with Long offering help in English, chemistry, physics, biology,  math, and in ACT preparation.
