Stress proves to be helpful or harmful

In today’s society, students are becoming more stressed with balancing after school activities, homework and part-time jobs. However, stress can sometimes motivate students and help them perform better.

Although many link the word stress with a negative connotation, it can improve a person’s mental health. According to MSNBC, a moderate amount of stress can improve the function of the heart and help the body resist infections. Some could say that people inflict stress on themselves. Richard Carlson, author of Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…And It’s All Small Stuff stated that he believes many people take small problems in life and they tend to “blow it out of proportion.”

While stress can be helpful to one’s mental and physical health, the key is to find a balance and know how much stress the mind can take. Webmd.com states that too much stress can give a person the opposite effects and actually weaken the immune system.

So how does one find a balance? Helpguide.org explains that it is easy to achieve a balance when you exercise, get sleep, and keep your body mentally and physically healthy. When one keeps the right balance of stress, the day-to-day activities in his or her life will become easier.

High school students are becoming more stressed as the years go on. However, if a student is aware of how to relieve stress, then their high school career will run more smoothly.
