As the clock ticks down to the start of the match, spectators start to fill the stands with anticipation and excitement. The Revere girls volleyball team enters their home gym for one of the last times in the 2024 campaign. Their captain, Jessa Randall is ready to lead her team to victory.
In the heart of Revere High School (RHS), Randall stands out as a dynamic leader, balancing her roles as captain of the volleyball team, student council president, an achieving student, and more. With a competitive spirit and commitment to Revere, she exemplifies an ideal student-athlete.
“This is my first year as captain… I try to keep the girls in a positive mood and lead them on the court,” Randall said.
This year marks Randall’s first season as captain of the volleyball team. Her positivity on the court has translated to their success so far this season.
“We are ranked fourth-[place] in all of Division III… We should make it pretty far [in playoffs]… We know what we have to do to stay focused and get the job done,” Randall said.
Randall has led Revere volleyball to an 18-4 regular season record and a fourth-place ranking in Division III. She looks forward to their playoff run and is ready to give it her all for the final games with the team.
“I play for AVC Academy Volleyball Cleveland… I play on the national team… We go out of state often,” Randall said.
Along with high school volleyball, Randall competes at a high club level. She travels nationally and battles some of the best teams in the country. Almost every weekend, Randall is at a new tournament or set of matches, refining her craft.
“In club [volleyball], you don’t really have a captain… I try to do the same thing I do for high school though… Everyone is the same age so no one is looking up to me, but I try to be a leader on the court,” Randall said.
Despite roles being different in the club realm, Randall continues to display her strong leadership skills. Playing on such a competitive team, Randall has been able to both learn from other top players and reflect her strengths onto others. In addition to being involved in high school and club volleyball, Randall is also the President of the Student Council.
“We do homecoming… We are doing a new thing called Boo-at-the-school… We do senior citizen breakfast, senior prom, Veterans Day, and just a lot of fun activities for the school,” Randall said.
Randall helps coordinate many large events as student council president. Her organizational skills and work ethic help her plan and carry out all these events. Alongside her as a captain of the volleyball team and the treasurer of the student council is Sydney Firca.
“I think she is a good leader… people respect her… She has a good work ethic… She doesn’t cheat her way through things… She is always open to new people talking to her or helping anyone that needs help,” Firca said.
Firca is highly involved with Randall in student council and volleyball and she experiences how Randall interacts with others and acts daily. Beth D’Amico, who advises student council, added her input about Randall.
“I have seen her in volleyball and all different student council activities… and tutoring… She is always there when you need her and even when you don’t need her,” D’Amico said.
D’Amico is involved in RHS and has seen Randall work in student council, volleyball, tutoring, school, and more. D’Amico believes Randall’s high involvement reflects her character and how responsible she is beyond her age.
“She is very organized, creative, very vocal… She knows what she wants and is open to new ideas,” D’Amico said.
D’Amico described Randall’s character, which she displays in all aspects of life. To manage all that she does, it is important to be organized and as a leader, the ability to be vocal is vital. Randall has developed many strong character traits of a leader in her activities.
“When you look at her, you know she is always thinking and through the years she has become more vocal,” D’Amico said.
Through the years, D’Amico has seen Randall grow into a vocal leader who always thinks about solutions or the next best thing. D’Amico believes Randall is still growing and will do great things in the future.
Randall stands out in RHS as a dynamic leader who strives for the best each and every day.
