Would Revere by any other name smell as sweet?

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet.” Was Romeo right? Would a name other than “Revere” work for our high school?

A handful of Revere community members have approached Revere Local School District Superintendent Matthew Montgomery about a possible school name change. While Mr. Montgomery made clear that a name change is not yet in progress, he voiced that he is willing to discuss the subject.

“[Members of the Revere community] came to me during the campaign [for the 2016 bond issue] wondering if we would consider changing the names of some of the buildings with the new construction. I did not commit to anything outside of being willing to engage in a conversation about the possibility,” Montgomery said.

He also explained that he believes that this request is stemming from the fact that multiple communities come together to form this district.

Revere provides a neutral name to represent the several cities that make up the Revere district. Also, a name change could result in a lot of unnecessary backlash and negative reactions from members of each community should the name favor one or two communities.

On the other hand, with the approaching construction of a new school if there ever were a time to change the district name, now would be the time to do it.

As of now, there are no plans involving a district name change, but as the construction process of new school buildings gets further along, it may be up for discussion within the community. Hopefully, the district keeps the name that has served the community well for years and should continue to for years to come.
