Women’s golf team succeeds in Suburban League play

The Revere High School Girls Golf team went into the season looking to improve as a team and they reached their goal of finishing third in the Suburban League.

Four year Coach Moira Alfieri mentioned her history of coaching and her opinion of golf as a unique sport to coach.

“With the intensity of our season, unlike other sports, we have no preparation time. The golfers need to come to the team ready to compete. The season starts August 1,[and] matches and tournaments begin immediately. Also, golf has no bench to pull from. Each match, every member of the team is playing,” Alfieri said.

Alfieri also set specific team goals that she wanted to see her team achieve in the upcoming season.

“The RHS girls’ golf team goals for 2015 are to improve our scores with consistency around the greens [in] both putting and chipping in addition to keeping focused on [our] mental game,” Alfieri said.

RHS Senior Elyssa Zablo expanded on the matter.

“Those are parts of the game that can add up very quickly,” Zablo said.

The team has been practicing very hard throughout the season in order to become better as a team. RHS senior Alyssa Nicholas commented on what the team’s practice usually consists of.

“We practice every day, and usually we’re at the range hitting balls or we go out and play on a course,” Nicholas said.
Nicholas also described why she enjoys the sport.

“I just like that it does differ from all of the other sports and you can go out and have fun and meet new people, and it’s a relaxing game,” Nicholas said.

Zablo also talked of how golf differs from some other sports.

“I think that golf is a different sport in that it’s a mental game, so it’s not just something you go and do and be amazing at it first it takes some work,” Zablo said.

The golf team made improvements as the season went on.  This year they competed in 8 matches, finishing with a record of 5-3. The team’s three seniors include Sathwika Thodeti, Nicholas, and Zablo.
