With a winning season built on teamwork, the Revere High School’s Women’s Varsity lacrosse team advances in the playoffs and the future.
The team’s record and placement as the 4th seed in the playoffs was an improvement from last year. To Head Coach Sean Kobunski, this was a great year for the team, stemming from their better play and communication.
“We finished the season 15-5, the best season that we’ve had since I’ve been here. We’ve played really well. We’ve taken care of business, and we beat teams,” Kobunski said.
The coaches attribute much of the team’s success to their better understanding of the program.
“Everyone’s just got another year under their belt in our system, in our culture, and it’s really paid dividends,” Kobunski said.
According to third year Assistant Coach Anthony Dipio, the players are motivated and have a winning mind.
“I believe that this team has bought into our philosophy, knows what it takes to win, and will do anything to accomplish their goals.” Dipio said.
Some of the players said that their sense of community and cooperation with one another was a source of their accomplishments.
Ava Coven, a sophmore on the team, said that the teammate’s bond this year made the season more enjoyable.
“This season there’s a lot more team bonding. The girls feel more connected, and it’s much more fun to play rather than being serious. It’s like an outlet for us all together,” Coven said.
Erin Parmalee, a freshman on Junior Varsity, also said she felt the impact of the team’s relationship.
“I think our season has gone well. We haven’t won a lot but we’ve grown as a team and I think that’s more important than winning. I hope that next year we can be better with our win percentage and really just bond more as a team,” Parmalee said.
Reflecting back on the season, A highlight for Kobunski from this season was the game against Columbus School for Girls.
“The win against Columbus School for Girls not too long ago was a big, big moment for the team. We did a really good job against the team that we lost to last year. It’s always good to get those revenge games,” Kobunski said.
Dipio also noticed the higher level of play among the players statistically and in game.
“We’re scoring goals at a high rate, we’re winning draws every game, and we dominated games from start to finish,” Dipio said.
With the success from this season, the team is feeling positive about the playoffs and beyond.
“This team is primed to do great things in the playoffs and then going forward this team is going to be great,” Dipio said.
Based on the success from this year, Kobunski has high ambitions for next year.
“I think that we’re going to be a really talented team again next year. The goal is always a state championship and we’re building towards that,” Kobunski said.
In the first game of the playoffs Revere defeated Wooster 13 to 19 on May 24. Revere moves on to play Rocky River on May 29.
