The Revere High School student council is working to make the school a fun and inclusive environment with various events to support the students and community.
The student council is organizing events for the 2023-2024 school year to build school spirit, creating opportunities for the student body to have fun and give back to the community.
Some of the events the student council has worked on in the first half of the school year are: the homecoming dance, Mum Day, the Veterans Day breakfast and parade, Minuteman Pride pancake breakfasts, Fun Fridays, and the Toys for Tots donation drive.
Emily Rion, counselor at RHS and the adviser of the student council, said that the purpose of these events is to give students the chance to be nice, and above all, be kind. She believes that a nice act is one that makes a person’s day better, while a kind act is one that can improve someone else’s life.
“If there is anything this world really, really, really needs right now is especially to empathize with our youth and our future, that it’s easy to be a nice person, but to be a kind person takes effort. It takes thought and sometimes courage to stand outside the norm,” Rion said.
Emily Garlesky, the president of student council, is motivated by the impact that their work has on the the student body.
“I love seeing students enjoying their time and making memories. I wanted to have a part in creating those memories for them and creating opportunities for them to make friends,” Garlesky said.
About 120 students participate in student council, which meets monthly to discuss and coordinate for upcoming events. Rion said that the student council officers help lead the efforts of the group.
“We really lean a lot on our student leadership from our amazing student council students, like the president, vice president, treasurer and secretary,” Rion said.
The student council provides a program where students get the chance to impact their community and be leaders.
“Its an opportunity for students to, if they want to be involved in any of our programs that we do, explore leadership,” Rion said.
Rion believes that the student council has created ambitious and aspiring student leaders. The main goal that they strive for this year is to help and serve the community, which they do through the many events and fundraisers, with the aim to make students more enthusiastic about school.
“Our goal is to improve school spirit, get everybody involved and give back to the community and our staff. We do appreciation weeks, pretty much including everyone and making events happen that everyone is involved in,” Rion said.
The student council has a busy year in continuing to support and engage the Revere High School community through activities throughout the school year.
While the student council has served the student body for many years, Olivia Jakab, the vice president of the student council said this year has been one of their best years, with more student involvement and new events.
“This year I think we have done a better job of incorporating new events,” Jakab said.
The student council and many programs like it are important for a high school’s learning environment, as they give a path for students to discover their passions and careers through them.
