Sophomore student attends leadership camp

Three current Revere High School sophomore girls plan to attend and participate in a leadership camp at the end of April.

Key Leader leadership camp, run by Kiwanis International, accepts students from grades seven to twelve. Shreya Datta attended the camp.

Jenny Kirchner, a guidance counselor at Revere High School, explained Kiwanis International’s goal.

“[Kiwanis International] is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time,” Kirchner said.

Kircher discussed the selection process.

[The school] had announcements on a number of different times and so all the students had to do was write an essay to say they are interested. By writing that interest paragraph they were invited to an interview with administrators and counselors,” Kirchner said.

Datta explained the activities that were done at the camp.

“At the camp we had lectures about leadership. We did a lot of group activities to work on leadership and communication skills; mostly it was just learning about how to work as a group and how to become key leaders,” Datta said.

Datta went on to explain that the lectures talked about characteristics of a key leader such as being a good listener, having integrity and having respect. She then went on to describe the environment of the discussions.

[We] talked about what how we could incorporate those characteristics into being a good leader. We had lots of group discussions and it was pretty nonjudgmental environment where everyone was encouraged to give their say,” Datta said.

Sophomore Libby Duncan had the opportunity to participate in the leadership camp. Duncan expressed her expectations for some of the camp experiences.

“I look forward to this new experience. I hope that I will grow as a leader and as a person. I know that this weekend will leave me with valuable knowledge for the future,” Duncan said.

Sophomore Leah Espinal explained her expectations for the camp.

“I expect to meet a lot of new people and to not only expand my horizons and knowledge of leadership but to just have fun. [Also] talking to some other people who want to achieve that goal as well,” Espinal said.

Unfortunately Duncan and Espinal could not attend the camp. The camp took place from April 22 to April 24 in Ashley, Ohio.
