Eco Club keeps RHS “green”

The Ecology club works to improve the environment through their recycling program at Revere High School, under leadership of the senior president and vice president.

The Ecology club has brought awareness about the benefits of recycling to Revere High School for almost sixteen years. Club adviser and French teacher Diane Gerspacher explained how the club got started.

“A group of students who were concerned about the environment wanted to start it up and my mom [the previous French teacher] agreed to be the adviser,” Gerspacher said.

Revere High School requires certain information and reasoning before any school-sanctioned club ensues. Senior president Yash Kahai explained why he believes the Ecology club started at the school.

“I think Revere’s Ecology club began out of necessity. The students recognized the necessity to preserve our community’s resources. They knew that schools, especially Revere, generate plenty of waste and something must be done. They took the call for action and founded a club to create the school’s first “green” initiative,” Kahai said.

Vice president and senior Simon Kirkendall was elected to his position this year. He described what goes on at a typical meeting.

“In a typical meeting, the members show up and sign in, followed by the president, Yash Kahai, assigning sections of the school to groups of two to five people and then the groups go out and collect baskets of recyclables and dump them in the recycling bin,” Kirkendall said.

The Revere High School Ecology Club was first started for the purpose of trying to raise awareness about recycling. The students lead with the example of having a “green thumb” and try to help people learn the importance of recycling.
