Local weatherman uses social media to connect with fans

A local weather man from WKYC network uses social media as a way to reach his subscribers on a personal level.

Meteorologist Mark Johnson uses Twitter and Snapchat to stay connected with his fans around Northeast Ohio and to directly give weather updates. Johnson earned his degree from Mississippi State University and has been involved in meteorology for over 27 years.

Johnson explained why he thinks using social media for weather updates benefits his viewers.

“I want you to get your weather information from me. It is going to be more accurate, because I am a local meteorologist who knows local weather patterns. Those apps on your phone are called ‘Crap Apps’ for a reason, they are not accurate. I am here to help you plan your fun, whether it is a snow day or track meet or lacrosse,” Johnson said.

Senior at Revere High School AJ Thompson described Johnson as a weatherman.

“Mark Johnson is not the typical weather guy who just throws out the forecast for the week. He brings fun into it, and will even predict the snow day chances which all students have used from time to time. He is very active on social media, and will even give personalized forecasts for games if you ask him,” Thompson said.

Johnson also forecasted the weather for the 2016 summer.

“We are coming out of a very strong El Nino, warmer than normal water near the equator in the Pacific Ocean. That made our winter much warmer than normal. I would expect some hot and dry weather by mid-to-late summer this year, great pool weather,” Johnson said.

Thompson explained his relationship with Johnson and expressed his opinion of Johnson.

“I follow Johnson on Twitter trying to get the latest on the snow day forecasts, and then it turned into snapchatting with him. We have gone to lunch a couple times. Johnson is a very caring guy who really wants the best for the city and community which makes him very popular with the younger crowd, and even the older crowd. He really is a great example of what Cleveland stands for,” Thompson said.

Johnson will continue to post weather updates on his social media to stay connected with his followers. Johnson’s Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat handle is markjweather.
