RHS Mock Trial team achieves regional success

The Revere High School Mock Trial team plans to work towards the state tournament, instructing an array of new members.
Revere High School teacher Ellen Friery, the team’s head coach and adviser, has three other attorneys to help her coach the team: Lucas Blower, Tom Kelley, and Tom Skidmore.

Friery discussed what the team tries to accomplish at its practices.

“[We] accomplish as much as we can, [we] prepare to argue the case in real court. Students take on notes of attorneys and learn how to question witnesses, object to the other side, and handle themselves in court as real attorneys,” Friery said.

Senior Bharat Kumar is a member and a prosecuting attorney for the Mock Trial team. The attorneys serve as the lawyers on the team, and they question the witnesses. Kumar commented on the different jobs people have on the team.

“[We] have attorneys, time keepers, witnesses, and a case analyst,” Kumar said.

Three separate teams formulate the whole Revere Mock Trial team because of the number of participants. There are a total of thirty people on the whole team. Only seven of the thirty people on the team have previous Mock Trial experience, training 23 new Mock Trial team members.

Friery commented on how the team did at their previous competition at the Medina Courthouse where they competed against Independence and Buckeye.

“Two teams won one trial and lost one, one team won both trials, so [they] move on to the next level of competition. [We] won five individual awards,” Friery said.

Junior Jake Kahoe, an attorney on the team, explained what happens during a competition.

“[We] act out a real court case inside of a real courtroom. The attorneys go through their opening statements, ask witnesses questions, and then cross examine the other side’s witnesses. Then finally attorneys give closing statements. There are real life judges to decide the winner of the case,” Kahoe said.

The Mock Trial team has practice every Wednesday and Friday after school. The red team lost in their regional competition on February 19.
