Student Council plans men’s volleyball tournament
Revere High School’s Student Council will host a men’s volleyball tournament this spring, selling concessions to raise funds for the Student Council and invigorate student involvement in the school.
RHS junior Courtney McClellan, vice president of Student Council, discussed the reasoning behind holding the volleyball game this year.
“[The volleyball game] is a way to get boys involved in the school since we do powderpuff for the girls already,” McClellan said.
RHS senior Caroline Edwards, president of Student Council, also mentioned that the student body’s interest in men’s volleyball contributed to the decision to hold the game this year. Edwards discussed the purpose and benefits of the game.
“The purpose of the tournament is to promote student involvement and cameraderie in a fun activity. It will be a great event for spectators too. It will also serve as a small fundraiser for Student Council, since there will be a team participation fee, optional t-shirts and concessions,” Edwards said.
Edwards explained who will aid in preparation and execution of the game and how it will run.
“Student Council is organizing the tournament. Our chairpersons of the event will work closely with the leaders of the volleyball team, who will help us work out the details, set up the equipment and serve as referees,” Edwards said.
Student Council will also sell food on the day of the game. Jenny Kirchner, a guidance counselor at RHS and the Student Council adviser, revealed the details of the game’s entertainment aspect.
“Anybody who wants to go can go. We will probably sell pizza and lunch items. We really want to appeal to the students,” Kirchner said.
Students who are interested will sign up by team, not by grade, to allow for more than only four teams. Players should have six to ten team members from any grade and choose a team name. Teams can decide whether they want a coach from the Women’s Volleyball team and whether they would like to purchase event t-shirts.
Edwards highlighted the benefits of this process.
“[With] this [process], teams are not limited to a single grade or just students. There is a rumor that the staff might put together a team for the tournament,” Edwards said.
The game will take place on the last day of the second trimester right after the early dismissal. Warm-ups will go from dismissal until 11 am when the games officially begin.
