International Club introduces students to many cultures

Revere High School’s International Club is hoping to encourage students to learn about other cultures and nations while eating foreign foods in the school environment.

Revere High School social studies teacher Jason Milczewski, the adviser of International Club, has helped spread information on nations and cultures for over ten years. The presidents of International Club include Ben Berry, Mitchell Sawka, Dana Suchy and Jordan Stidd. Berry commented on the goals of the club.

“International Club aims to spread cultural awareness through first hand experiences and information, while offering a relaxing and fun environment,” Berry said.

Berry also stated what meetings consist of.

“A normal meeting includes a 15-20 minute presentation on a country, followed by a cultural dish to share with the group,” Berry said.

The club’s presentations are student-led. Milczewski explained how the International Club finds students to talk about foreign countries.

“We identify students in the school who either are international themselves, [have] parents [who] are international or have some deep connection,” Milczewski said.

Senior president Suchy explained that her role as president involves finding presenters and setting dates for presentations.
International Club also has a service requirement.

Milczewski explained that the club has raised funds for service projects by hosting muffin sales in the past. They are partnering with the Rotary Club now. He explained what the club was doing this year with the Rotary Club.

“This year we are attempting to do a trivia contest at lunch and have people donate [money] in order to participate. [We are trying] to make it competitive and do teams of students. We are going to do it for Polio Plus which is part of the Rotary Club to attempt to end polio around the world,” Milczewski said.

Service is not the only benefit of being part of International Club, according to Suchy.

“The benefits for being in International Club are using it on college applications, resumes and the free food,” Suchy said.
Those interested in joining can talk to Milczewski or attend the next meeting.
