At the beginning of every season, Men’s Varsity Golf coach David Archer asks his team to write the goals they want to accomplish for that season. Archer’s thought was, if you don’t know where you want to be, then how will you get there. Reflecting back on the season that has just ended is difficult, but the Revere High School Men’s and Women’s Varsity Golf teams could do so with pride knowing that they had arrived.
Revere Varsity golfers ended the season the second week of October, having achieved personal and team goals and competing at the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Men’s and Women’s District Tournaments lead by Archer and Jermy Harpley, coach of the women’s Varsity golf team.
Although the Men’s and Women’s Varsity team’s two month long season came to an end after failing to advance past the District Tournament, it was hardly disappointing. In assessing the Men’s Varsity team’s season, Archer said, “Well it’s kind of tough being as we just found out our season ended about two hours ago,” after learning that the Men’s Varsity team had come up short of moving on from the District Tournament, but Archer felt that the season went well—even in light of the lofty expectations the team had for themselves.
This year, the boys were ambitious with their goals and determined to reach them.
“I asked them to be aggressive with their goals and they were, and they hit a number of them,” Archer said.
As for the women, Harpley credited them for their successful season and for their high level of play in the District Tournament.
“We not only reached our goals, we exceeded our goals for the season. We had every lady shoot a career low, all fourteen of them, at one point during the year, ” Harpley said.
Both teams reached their goals through hard work and determination. Grant Banning, a senior on the Men’s Varsity team, said that he saw his teammates push and better each other.
“We practice a lot, we practice with a purpose, and I think our mentality mostly is what’s gotten us here,” Banning said.
Adding to Banning’s perspective, Archer took notice of the team’s work ethic and commitment as well. Archer saw their efforts during practice, when the team would motivate themselves and each other to work hard.
“I think the way the boys pushed each other, expect more from one another without it being a why aren’t you doing your part?” Archer said.
Harpley attributed the Women’s Varsity team’s tenacity for accomplishing their goals to how they worked themselves and their fellow teammates at each practice.
“We have a team of fourteen girls who, every day, pushed each other to be better. And it was through their competition with one another and their practice and their effort that they put forth since August that led to those results,” Harpley said.
The coaches and the players of the varsity teams feel they have achieved many accomplishments for themselves and for the golf program. The Revere golfers had competed in the District Tournaments, which was the first time the boys team had done so in nine years. Banning attributed this success to the team’s mindset and attitude.
“To be honest, I think it’s our mindset all year. We came in the year super optimistic,” Banning said
Archer credited many of his players for having great seasons.
Some of the most notable things he saw from his team were the some of the young golfers that he said were “fitting right in like he has been there for three years.” Archer also noted that his upperclassmen golfers were reliable leaders and rallied the team all throughout the season.
Archer noted that the boys as a whole were impressive as well.
“Last year when I did our team cumulative GPA I believe the average across all sixteen boys in the golf program was 3.92. So as good as they are on the golf course, they are even better people and amazing students,” Archer said.
Harpley noted that many of his girls had amazing seasons. Some girls whose performances stood out to him this season are juniors Maddie Harpley and Saumya Mahajan who were both district qualifiers.
Harpley noted that freshmen Kate Banning, Amrita Deo and Ryenne Harpley were at the district tournament where the team was three shots away from qualifying.
“Our 333 score was a Revere School record, it was 25 shots better than last year and it would have qualified us for districts in any other sectional in Northeast Ohio,” Harpley said.
Although the pride of winning is a great feeling, the time spent participating in it is what one gets from it. Both coaches enjoyed seeing the work and effort their teams put into the season.
“The ladies themselves, being with them, watching them get better, enjoying themselves, working through the process to get better has been rewarding since I started in August,” Harpley said.
Archer said that “Some of my fondest memories from high school were from playing high school golf. I know the friendships that they are developing today are friendships that they will maintain for a long, long time.”
Even as they look back at the season, the teams can begin to look forward to offseason training and envision future success.
“I think our qualification for districts and competing in the District Tournament today was the first of many years to come. “I think the program is headed for very, very good things. And I would say I’d like to think that the rest of the Suburban League should notice that we are building something good and that we are going to be around to compete for a while,” Archer said.
Both teams look back at their accomplishments with pride and confidence to continue to build a successful Revere golf program.
