Students work at local ski resort

Walking down the hallway, one comes across various students wearing grey hoodies with mountainous logos on the front. These hoodies belong to Boston Mills/Brandywine, a ski resort in Peninsula that attracts many Revere students looking for work during the winter months.

Senior Jessie Spann works in the kitchen on Wednesdays and Fridays but also picks up random shifts as well. Spann also works at Country Maid, an ice cream store in Richfield, so she described how that factored into her decision to apply.

“I wanted to find a job for the winter so I could save up some money for college,” Spann said.

Spann also mentioned that her friend, fellow senior Hannah Kulhawick, recommended she work there as well.

“She loves it, so she talked to her boss and helped me get a job there,” Spann said.

Spann uses her occupation as an opportunity to snowboard more often. She mentioned that she barely snowboarded at the beginning of the season but now tries to go about once a week. She explained that many of her friends join in this activity as well.

“I snowboarded from a young age until eighth grade, but then I didn’t really have enough time or interest and stopped the past couple of years. Having a free pass got me out again this season . . . it’s a lot of fun,” Spann said.

Kulhawick works in the kitchen at Brandywine as well. Kulhawick described a typical work day.

“I go directly from school to work. I go in, prepare food, and make sure everything is ready. Then I serve food, cook, stock or clean for the rest of the evening. Then we close at 9:30 pm on weekdays or 1:00 a.m. weekends. From there we just clean and then leave,” Kulhawick said.

Kulhawick has worked at Brandywine for two seasons now. She gave her reason for beginning to work at the ski resort in the first place.

“A friend of mine worked there, and I could learn how to snowboard for free,” Kulhawick said.

Junior Dylan Kostar is another Revere student who works at Brandywine ski resort. Just like Spann and Kulhawick, Kostar works in the kitchen. He explained the tasks given to him on a work day.

“Usually I get there, we put together the grill and make sure everything is on and hot, and then we start making burgers and fries and chicken patties and nuggets to fill up our warming trays and then after that we keep cooking as people come in,” Kostar said.

Kostar enjoys skiing and mentioned that he skis at least once a week if not more. Kostar has made a lot of friends through his work at Brandywine, and when asked about a favorite memory he stated the following:

“I don’t think I could pick a single one because something fun or ridiculous happens just about every night,” Kostar said.

As the winter months come to an end, the Revere employees of Brandywine look forward to returning next year.
