Trivia tradition reunites alumni and current students

On a Wednesday night at the Hooley House, the room is quiet. All of the participants scramble to write down the correct answer for each trivia question without letting their opponents hear them. On one side of the room sit seven girls who go to trivia whenever their college friends are back in town. On the other side of the room sits Family Circus, the girls’ longtime rival.

Every Wednesday night when they are all in town, Emma Boltz, Lydia Butler, Haley Daubenmire, Shannon Kahoe,  Maggie McGuigan, Sophie Paxton and Allie Staats attend trivia night at the Hooley House. McGuigan and Kahoe are Revere alumni who are now sophomores in college. McGuigan attends The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and Kahoe attends Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The rest of the girls are current seniors at Revere High School.

Trivia night at Hooley House provides many opportunities to win prizes. Hooley House manager Mike Schultz spoke about the atmosphere of Wednesday night trivia.

“It’s a fun, friendly, relaxed environment with six rounds of trivia. We give out house prizes like free appetizers  . . . and brownie bites . . . . The winner overall gets a gift card,” Schultz said.

Daubenmire described the atmosphere at trivia night.

“We are all seated in the main dining area, and then this girl sits on a stage and reads us the questions. It gets really quiet and you’re seated close to other teams, so you have to make sure to whisper your answers so other teams won’t hear you,” Daubenmire said.

The girls have been going to Hooley House since the summer of 2016. They go to trivia about once a month when they are all in town.

“We generally go when Shannon and I are home from school as a way to get everyone together again,” McGuigan said.

The girls view trivia as an opportunity to have fun, and because of this they have developed a rivalry with another team, Family Circus. Family circus is another team that competes on Wednesday nights. Butler spoke about a victory over Family Circus.

“They always win so naturally . . .  and one night we finally beat them! We ended up getting a $10 gift card, and it was amazing,” Butler said.

The girls hope to continue doing trivia in the future whenever they are all in town.
