District welcomes new interim superintendent

So far, working here has been a real pleasure. . . . We have a great staff of teachers, administrators and classified support employees.

— Dr. Joseph Madak

The Revere Local School District is welcoming a new interim superintendent while continuing its search for a permanent successor to the position.

After the district’s previous superintendent Randy Boroff expressed his wish to retire at the end of 2014, the Revere Board of Education began working alongside the search firm Finding Leaders to select both his interim and permanent successor. On November 25, 2014, the Board hired P. Joseph Madak, Ph.D, as the interim superintendent for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year. Board member Dana Appel spoke of the process of selecting the interim superintendent.

“This fall, the Board interviewed three candidates for interim, who were brought to us by Finding Leaders, and we unanimously selected Madak as the candidate most qualified to serve as interim superintendent,” Appel said.

Madak possesses 47 years of educational experience, having worked as a teacher, principal and superintendent in the past. He also explained the selection process.

“The Board of Education advertised the opening and requested interested parties [ to submit applications, which] were received and screened. A number of applicants were invited to come to an interview with the Board of Education. The references of these selected applicants were checked thoroughly, [and] I and others interviewed with the Board of Education. After interviewing these finalists, the Board of Education offered me the position of Interim Superintendent of Revere Schools,” Madak said.

Among other things, Madak has worked in various school districts as a teacher, principal and superintendent before coming to Revere. In addition to his new position at Revere, he is continuing to teach online courses for the University of Dayton. He described how he found out about the position and what attracted him to it.

“I found out about the position from a colleague…I was attracted to this position by the concurrence of it becoming open and available and my desire to continue to be involved in trying to make schools better for students. I was also attracted by Revere’s reputation of being a high performance and high quality school district,” Madak said.

Madak officially succeeded Boroff on January 1, 2015. He spoke of his experience in the district so far.

“So far, working here has been a real pleasure. I have been very impressed by the things I [have seen] as I have visited the schools. We have a great staff of teachers, administrators and classified support employees. Everyone has been very helpful and accommodating…. I look forward to meeting and working with the others,” Madak said.

Madak believes that his responsibilities as interim superintendent include providing leadership to the district, preserving the current operation of the schools and planning for the future. He listed his goals for the remainder of the school year.

“My goals as interim superintendent are to provide leadership for the day-to-day operations of Revere Schools, to work with everyone to have the best possible rest of this 2014-2015 school year, to observe and provide suggestions that might improve [the district, or that] might be helpful in planning for Revere’s future [and] to do what can be done to contribute to the success of Revere’s next superintendent,” Madak said.

Madak will serve as interim superintendent for the remainder of the school year, but he is not a candidate for the permanent position. Claudia Hower, president of the Revere Board of Education, explained the board’s plans for hiring the district’s permanent superintendent.

“The board’s intent is to hire a full-time superintendent at our February board meeting with the full-time superintendent starting their employment with the district in the summer of 2015,” Hower said.

Once hired by the Board, the permanent superintendent will assume his or her duties this summer.
