Local magazine offers Revere graduate journalism experience

Following her first semester in college, Revere graduate Lizzie Pruitt brainstormed ideas of journalism-related things that she could do. She thought about applying to write for the Akron Beacon Journal or even coming back to RHS to help out with the Lantern. Then she remembered an article that the Lantern had published her junior year about Today’s Bride magazine. Loving everything about weddings, Pruitt sent Today’s Bride an email with her resume and cover letter asking them about a possible internship. A day later, the Today’s Bride staff emailed her back asking her to schedule an interview with them. After the interview, Today’s Bride immediately offered her a position as an intern.

Pruitt currently works as an editorial intern for Today’s Bride under social media and content stylist, Denise Wright. She had some prior journalism experience since she served on Lantern staff for three years during high school. Pruitt expanded on what she believes allowed her to gain the internship.

“I was on Lantern for three years, being a reporter then feature editor then editor-in-chief. I attended a summer camp and did leadership training for months, so that helped me with experience with writing and executive skills,” Pruitt said.

Pruitt’s father, Mark, traced Pruitt’s interest to journalism back to “at least ninth grade,” but her interest in writing dates even further back to when started keeping journals and enjoying writing in junior high school. Mark voiced what he hopes that Pruitt gains from the experience.

“[The internship] will help her to develop her powers of expression, the clarity she needs to be captivating, and a chance to practice getting a lot of content into a limited space [and will give her] increasing confidence which is something even the best writers need at every stage in their career,” Mark said.

She interns three days a week. Pruitt is and mainly focuses on writing for the magazine’s blog but also helps out with Today’s Bride’s new website, edits and chooses photos. Also, Today’s Bride will host a bridal show in April with which Pruitt will assist in doing whatever is necessary. Pruitt’s boss, social media and content stylist Denise Wright elaborated on Pruitt’s tasks and their significance to the company.

“We try to give all of our interns [the] things that they are going to learn from and that will help us,” Wright said.

For that reason, according to Wright, internships with smaller companies like Today’s Bride are more beneficial than those with larger companies because smaller companies have a smaller staff, which means that interns will more likely take an active role in the company, allowing them to gain vital experience in their desired field.

Pruitt’s internship has allowed her to explore journalism and clarified her career interests. She now has a full time job with Today’s Bride, and she will major in journalism at Kent State University in the fall.
