Junior serves as student council president
Orders for the Homecoming decorations were missing, and Student Council’s notification on the matter arrived only one day before the Homecoming game. After brainstorming on how to tackle the dilemma for an hour and a half, Miranda Koewler, president, and vice president Nathan Peterman found some people who could make the decorations for them, make sashes, and sell Student Council tiaras.
Junior Miranda Koewler currently serves as the Student Council President. She served as the Student Council president at RMS in 8th grade. She is on the Varsity cheer squad and also participates in competitive dancing.
Koewler explained the duties as president, including what it requires and how the position can be somewhat stressful.
“Student Council president has to work on planning homecoming… [Has] to plan the blood drives and oversee the balance… The president has to be really responsible, organized and not be afraid to be the leader of the crowd… Yes, the position is very stressful, especially around homecoming. When something goes wrong, not many people know what to do. I rely on [the] board to help me with this,” Koewler said.
Kathy Shisler, Student Council adviser, stated that in the past there was more “distance between the members.” However, she said that Koewler is handling the position very well.
“Miranda is organized, she is prepared, and she has presence. She is very kind, and is working with everyone else. She wouldn’t expect the class board to do anything that she wouldn’t, and the students know who to look to. She has a lot of energy, and is always upbeat,” Shisler said.
Shisler talked about the occasion of a junior being elected and her opinion on one being president.
“We had a junior president a couple years ago… they were a co-president. This year we just have one president.… So far it has been great… the election is not necessarily based on age, but on maturity… Also, Miranda would be able to run next year,” Shisler said.
Adriana Farian, the Student Council secretary, explained how Koewler has helped to keep Student Council running smoothly.
“She tells me everything ahead of time, and doesn’t rush me so I can get everything done,” Farian said.
Peterman also commented on Koewler’s contributions.
“She is the best we have had… runs the show, is amazingly organized and dedicated even though she is in multiple clubs… Someone I can rely on if things go wrong. She’s my boss so if something goes wrong I can always complain to her,” Peterman said.
Koewler participates in multiple AP classes, participates in competitive dance sixteen hours a week, and works as an assistant teacher for two dance classes. She commented on how she juggles all of this at once.
“It just kind of happens, actually. Surprisingly I don’t lose too much sleep,” Koewler said.
Koewler helps run Student Council, and works to balance all of her activities that she undertakes on top of her academic and social life.
