Homecoming takes place “under the sea”

The scoreboard read 0-6 as the red-uniformed band spread out across the 50-yard line. Under the dark sky, with distant lightning flickering through the otherwise calm night, nine couples walked between two columns of band members, escorted by their families. Freshman, sophomore and junior court members made their way to the home sideline, and then the seniors began to stride across the field. Finally, the long-awaited moment culminated as last year’s monarchs Liz Papas and Joe D’Amico crowned Revere High School’s 2013 Homecoming king and queen.

After two weeks of decorating and voting, Revere High School’s Homecoming festivities came to a close following the Homecoming game and dance on September 20 and 21.

The king and queen received their crowns Friday night at the game, while on Saturday night Student Council hosted the Homecoming Dance themed “Under the Sea.”

Student Council was responsible for all the Homecoming preparations. Led by President Miranda Koewler and Vice President Nathan Peterman, the group planned the hallway decorations, organized the voting, sold tickets, set up decorations for the dance, and prepared the half-time events. However, Student Council began its preparations for Homecoming long before the start of the school year.

“Student Council voted for the theme [“Under the Sea”] at the end of [last] year . . . . Over the summer, we plan a lot with the decorations,” Koewler said.

Members of Student Council designed most of the items used, from the tickets to a large portion of the decorations, like streamers and balloons, with help from advisers Kathleen Shisler and Paulette Colantone. Even the slideshow used to introduce the court was student-produced this year.

Shisler applauded the group on its planning and execution for the Homecoming festivities.

“It’s a group effort with everything on Homecoming… [for example] in prop selection and setup,” Shisler said.

Shisler helped the students rent some of the larger props from the North Coast Theatrical Company. Student Council members searched the company’s warehouse looking for potentially useful props, finding lobster cages, a giant ship wheel and more. Friday after school, students entered and left Shisler’s room with decorations and props to prepare for the dance. Later, Student Council also gathered together the court for the Homecoming game, prepared the flowers and ribbons and coordinated the half-time events.

Freshmen Lucy Zhang and Clayton Langdon; sophomores Hayley Hendrickson and Noah Gresser; juniors Alison Baumgardner and Mike Miller and senior couples Robb Milks and Shelby Starkey, Christianos Burlotos and Megan Rogerson, Jordan Holtkamp and Abby Anacki, Brandon Taylor and Addie D’Amico, Joe Pearl and Marissa Harbath and Joel Gerberich and Maddie Holvey all won this year’s seats on Homecoming Court.

On Thursday, September 17, students voted for king and queen from the senior court.

On the night of the game, Revere faced off in a low-scoring fight against Green, reaching within five yards of the end zone twice but failing to score. Unfortunately for the Minutemen, Green took the lead with a touchdown, leading 6 to 0 over the Minutemen at half, when the court walked out and the king and queen received their crowns.

The Homecoming festivities ended with the dance on Saturday, September 21 The “Under the Sea” theme was ambraced by streamers, balloons and various props and sold over 600 tickets.

Student Council, the source of all the planning, similarly finished up by arriving Sunday to clean up.

Overall, the Homecoming events ended on Saturday, September 21, after months of preparation by Student Council. The students ultimately crowned Joel Gerberich and Maddie Holvey as king and queen under a distantly thundering sky, and despite a postponed loss to Green, the festivities wrapped up smoothly with the “Under the Sea” dance.
