Touchdown Club awards Revere coaches, student athletes

The Akron Touchdown Club recognized two Revere High School coaches as Coach of the Year and one athlete as Player of the Year and four as All-Stars.

On January 9th at Guy’s Party Center, the Akron Touchdown Club, an organization that primarily seeks to recognize student athletes from and sponsor youth athletic events in Summit and Portage counties named RHS mathematics teacher and volleyball coach Jenna Repp as well as RHS guidance counselor and men’s soccer coach Nick DePompei as Coaches of the Year. The group also recognized Viktoria Farian as Player of the Year in volleyball and awarded spots on their All-Star teams to women’s soccer players Alexa Langenfeld and Audrey Harding and to men’s soccer players Zack Kasson and Zane VanFossen. DePompei described the proceedings at the banquet.

“They did kind of a recap of the year of all of the teams that did really well in Portage and Summit counties as a whole, and then they acknowledged those teams. Then they went through announcing [individual award winners,] who came up and shook hands. There were coaches of the year and players of the year, and then there were the all-star teams. We had a little of all of those with our athletes here, which was nice,” DePompei said.

Senior Alexa Langenfeld has attended the banquet for the past three years, and enjoys seeing her teammates from both Revere and club teams recognized.

“Not everyone gets into the Touchdown Club, so if you get in, it is pretty special,” Langenfeld said.

DePompei enjoyed seeing two of his players awarded for their performances this season.

“I thought it was awesome for them. They did a really good job. With Zane as a senior, it was a really nice award to kind of go out. Zack has just been doing really well and has been compiling a lot of stuff over the years, being a three year starter, and moving into his senior year, this was a nice springboard for him,” DePompei said.

Athletic Director Tom McKinnon, as well as several other administrators, attended the banquet in support of Revere’s awarded athletes. The number of coaches and athletes from Revere awarded impressed him.

“I am coming from a small school, and we maybe had one or two [recognized by the club] in the whole time that I was at my previous school. To see that number of students recognized is a great accomplishment, and along with having two coaches recognized, it was fantastic,” McKinnon said.

The event provided additional recognition to these athletes at the conclusion of a season in which the men’s varsity soccer team advanced to the state championship, the women’s soccer team advanced to the district semi-final, and the volleyball team advanced to the regional semifinals.
