The Revere High School (RHS) National Honor Society (NHS) and Recycling Club worked together to organize the Winter Dance and raise funds for future club endeavors.
The Winter Dance is an NHS tradition and one of the largest fundraisers for the group. These funds are used to support future dances and other purchases. NHS adviser Paul Fisher spoke more in-depth about how the dance benefits the NHS.
“[We] raise money for a variety of things. We use [the money] for scholarships and also to, hopefully, provide an opportunity for social [events] for the kids,” Fisher said.
While the dance is an NHS fundraiser, The Recycling Club will be receiving a part of the profit from the tickets. Recycling Club Co-President and NHS member Noah Restivo spoke about Recycling Club’s plans for the earnings.
“Some of the teachers have complained about their recycling bins, so we wanted to invest in larger and more recycling bins. . . . [We are] also looking into getting recycling bins for the cafeteria, because there aren’t any around the cafeteria. . . . There will be a larger deposit [of recyclables],” Restivo said.
These proceeds will benefit not only the clubs involved but also the Revere community. Recycling Club is a big part in keeping the school clean and eco-friendly. This is one of the reasons why NHS chose the Recycling Club to help in the dance; the main reason was numbers. Restivo went more in-depth about the NHS’s decision.
“I think last time we counted [we had] 110 members. . . . NHS reached out to us because with all those numbers, it would be really easy to set up and tear down the dance,” Restivo said.
While the dance is a fundraiser for the clubs, it also provides an opportunity for a fun night with friends. Leah Valentine, the NHS’s fundraising chairperson, spoke about her hopes for the event.
“I think the biggest thing would just be getting people to come to the winter dance because historically [the] winter dance is not very well attended. . . . It would be most helpful if people just got excited about it,” Valentine said.
Restivo described how the winter dance compares to the other dances that the Student Council holds.
“The point of the dance is that it’s not as formal as a prom or a homecoming, but you can still go out and dress up a little and have fun with some friends,” Restivo said.
The Winter Formal was held on February 24 and had a theme of Alice in Wonderland. In the words of Noah Restivo, “I think everyone should come.”
