Students participate in indoor track program
Student athletes participate in the second year of indoor track in order to help prepare for the regular track season.
The indoor track team consists of about twenty students ranging from freshmen to seniors. In its second year, indoor track is a separate season from outdoor, and its sole purpose is to help athletes stay in shape in between the fall and winter sports seasons.
Indoor track is sponsored through the company Spire located in Geneva, and last year, the team was paired up with another school to make one collective group. This year the group has grown large enough to make its own individual team, and junior sprinter Rachel DeWitt discussed that she hopes more individuals come out and join the team.
“I hope that more people that are serious about running can find time to join indoor track. I really do have a lot of fun participating and the facility we travel to is amazing,” DeWitt said.
Indoor track competes just the same as regular track, and most of the schools the team will face are located farther away because most competitions also take place in Geneva. Competitions consist of two or three schools.
Sophomore Sam Fisher commented on the major differences from last years indoor track season.
“Outdoor focuses more on technique…. Indoor track isn’t really necessary for everyone, but some athletes like the extra practice and preparation,” Fisher said.
Fisher also spoke on how head Coach Kevin Somerville has a different attitude going into the new season.
“[He] really put an emphasis on the fact that it’s a commitment rather than something casual that can be put aside. Indoor is recommended but not required. If you do commit you have to really commit,” Fisher said.
Meets will take place in January just in time for the regular track season.
