Annual event showcases students’ various talents

The Revere Players hosted their annual Variety Show this year with a theme based on the television show America’s Got Talent.

The show, which is a fundraiser for the Players, featured a variety of both middle school and high school students’ talents. This included singing, dancing, jump roping, instrumental numbers and more. Laurie Russell, director of Revere Players and the show, talked about the significance of having the show each year.

“It is basically an avenue for people who are not necessarily in plays, band or choir to showcase their talent. It is also a fun way to see a lot of different talents in our two schools,” Russell said.

Titled Revere’s Got Talent, this year’s show was hosted by RHS senior Samantha Fergason. Russell elaborated on the theme and what the audience should expect.

“The show [was] fashioned around the TV show, but with twists and turns. It [featured] a special surprise judge in between acts,” Russell said.

Junior Abbey Niemi participated in the Variety Show for her fourth year as a part of R.O.M.P: a dance that a group of girls perform in the show every year since 2003. Upperclassmen always include underclassmen in the show as a way to keep the tradition going each year for when others graduate. This year, Niemi, sophomore Natalie Polopoli and juniors Larissa Kurtz and Julie Mullet danced. Niemi explained what the group does.

“R.O.M.P. is a dance piece to electronic-style dance music. For R.O.M.P, we dress in all black and tape glow sticks around our bodies and then dance in the dark on stage. It’s really fun to be a part of, and it looks cool from the audience’s perspective,” Niemi said.

Eighth grader Hannah Kulhawick sang in a group with Jessica Spann, Paige Fritz and Hannah Weisburn. The group practiced on their own since October to get ready for try outs. This being her first year in the show, Kulhawick mentioned what she has enjoyed about preparing for it.

“I think the best part about being in the Variety Show is getting to know friends better and facing fears of going on stage,” Kulhawick said.

Darren LeBeau is head of the tech crew who ran the lighting and sound for the show. Jenny Smilan led a backstage crew of six, and Sean Nixon served as the head of lighting. Rena Baker and Robert Pierson assisted Russell in directing the production.

The show took place February 1st at RHS. A total of 26 acts performed during the show.
