Cheerleaders pair with senior boys in annual dance
Revere students performed once again for the student body in the annual dance at the Senior Night men’s basketball game.
For the past four years, the Varsity cheer squad has choreographed and presented a dance which features various senior boys as their dance partners. Junior and Varsity cheerleader Emma Boltz described the basics of the tradition.
“We get paired up with the senior guys by the senior cheerleaders, and we teach them the dance which we made up during the season. We perform it at the Senior Night game, which happened this year on February 17th against Tallmadge. It is a lot of fun to create and perform,” Boltz said.
The dancers held seven practices to prepare for the upcoming event. Senior Jake Kahoe, who participated in the dance this year, explained how much fun he had preparing for the dance and the work that went into learning it.
“It wasn’t amazing for having seven practices. That was probably way too many, but we needed it. You would definitely expect it to be incredible. Either way, I had fun learning it, and I am always up for embarrassing myself in front of the school. I especially loved practicing the flips in the middle,” Kahoe said.
The dance consisted of three parts: first, the cheerleaders performed their regular halftime dance to Drake’s “One Dance;” second, the boys came out and danced to “Ice Ice Baby,” “My Girl,” “Crazy in Love,” and “24K Magic;” finally, the two groups combined and did a partner dance to Olly Murs’ “Dance with Me Tonight.”
Senior Varsity captain Hannah Grayem commented on how it felt to be a senior dancing in her last home game.
“Being a senior in the dance is bittersweet. It’s amazing that we as seniors have the opportunity to coach and mentor the boys and the younger cheerleaders. It marks the end of something that we as cheerleaders have been a part of for ten years. We are experiencing many ‘lasts’ while also starting to look forward to many firsts,” Grayem said.
Senior Varsity captain Lilly Brock noted her excitement to see the guys do so well, even without any dancing experience.
Boltz and Kahoe both mentioned that they loved the beginning of the dance to “24K Magic,” and Boltz added her favorite part of the dance overall.
“The lift in the partner dance was the most fun, because Zane [VanFossen] chucked me in the air and I got some serious height,” Boltz said.
All members of the Varsity cheer squad participated, as well as seniors Nathan Albert, Jared Baumgardner, Joey Gilroy, Jason Graber, Nick Green, Bryce Harding, Joel Harding, Xavier Howard, Jake Kahoe, Peter Lombardi, Brendon Patena, Vince Rykalla, Chris Valensky, Zane VanFossen, and Ben Webster.
