Varsity softball team welcomes experienced coach
Coaching a high school sports team requires effort and good judgment. One should also gain a good connection with his or her team to boost morale, promote team unity, and learn the strengths and weaknesses within the team. One must learn to coach a variety of rotating personalities, as the makeup of the team is subject to change each season. Students also have other responsibilities along with games and training, so a coach must be able to help athletes balance their schedules. If a coach truly means to help the team perform to the best of their ability, one must put hours into working with the team.
Retired Akron Public Schools teacher Bob Mosher, who is the father of Revere teacher Dan Mosher, recently took over the position of the Revere High School softball coach after the resignation of the previous coach. With over thirty five years of coaching experience in several sports, including football, baseball, and women’s volleyball, Mosher sent his resume to Revere Athletic Director Tom McKinnon after learning of the position from his son, a teacher and coach at Revere.
The process for finding a new coach began with posting the opening inside the district and on the Ohio High School Athletic Association website. The school received resumes for three weeks, and the administrative team created questions that they find significant for the job. McKinnon elaborated on why Mosher received the position.
“We found [Mosher’s coaching experience] was an important part of the job, and he presented himself and the way he would run the program well,” McKinnon said.
Mosher began to coach his sons in youth sports in Mogadore. Over time, he noted his skill in teaching and coaching; however, he does not measure his successes in the scores of the games, as he explained.
“While I always play to win, to me, it is more important to teach the skills for a particular sport in order for my athletes to be successful. Teaching and coaching is also about teaching the life lessons that go hand in hand with athletics,” Mosher said.
Mosher plans to incorporate techniques previously used at Revere with his own, and he feels enthusiastic for this coaching opportunity. He has not been working with the players for long, but he has noticed the hard work and effort they contribute. Players also have a positive outlook on the upcoming season with their new coach, as senior Cheyenne Bondra stated.
“He seems like a good coach, and he is bringing in good assistant coaches for varsity and junior varsity. The other coaches are people that he has coached before,” Bondra said.
Mosher’s varsity assistant, East High School graduate Abby Morrison, played softball in high school, and won the Akron Beacon Journal Player of the Year award in 2002. Though the season has not begun yet, Mosher expressed his eagerness for this year.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to coach at Revere. It is a great community and a great school and I am looking forward to what this season holds for the team,” Mosher said.
The Revere softball team will not begin its season until March of 2017, but it has already begun its training process this winter.
