The women’s throwing team celebrates after a successful meet.

A retired football coach brings his plethora of coaching experience to the Revere High School women’s throwing team to take the team to the next level of success.

Current physical education teacher and former head coach of the Revere High School football team Terry Cistone is now the throwing coach for the Revere High School women’s track team. Cistone coached at the high school level for over 30 years, and an additional 5 years at the middle school level. He explained how he obtained the position as the throwing coach.

“I was not planning on coaching because I was going to watch my son Dominic play baseball at Lake High School. Mr. Mogus [former throwing coach and teacher at Revere High School] had to step down as the throwing coach at the beginning of the year. They needed to fill the position in a hurry, so I said I would help out,” Cistone said.

Cistone went on to explain his past coaching career with the track and field team.

“I started out fifteen years ago coaching the throwers at the middle school and then I moved up to the high school with Coach Dave Heideman for three years. I took a break from coaching track and then I came back in 2010 and was the women’s head coach for four years,” Cistone said.

Junior discus thrower McKenna Becker expressed her opinion of Cistone.

“Cistone is a great coach, he does not deal with athletes messing around, [he] always makes sure everyone gets a couple throws in the ring and helps improve our forms and technique,” Becker said.

Sophomore shot and discus thrower Elisabeth Kelly compared Cistone to her old throwing coach.

“Coach Cistone and coach Mogus both have very different coaching styles that focused on different things. The only difference is that coach Cistone incorporated core and weight lifting workouts into practice, while coach Mogus focused mainly on getting out to the ring and throwing,” Kelly said.

Becker also described Cistone’s coaching style.

“Cistone’s coaching style is not only audial but also visual, he is very straightforward with you and what you need to work on and improve. He tries to help everyone while we are working between shot and discus and does a very good job at it considering we have about fifteen throwers,” Becker said.

Cistone talked about the way he coaches track compared to other sports.

“Coaching is the same no matter what sport you are involved [in], teach the fundamentals, hard work, preparation and be willing to put the time in to get better. Track is more social and more laid back than football but if you want to be effective as a coach, you cannot have any short cuts, you are going to get out of it what you put into it, and that goes for the athlete also,” Cistone said.

The team finished with a 1 – 6 record. The senior throwers include Hannah Lovejoy and Ellen Race.
