Revere baseball team travels to Tennessee for tournament
The Revere High School men’s baseball team traveled to Chattanooga, Tennessee, over spring break, for four days to participate in a baseball tournament.
Seventh grade science teacher Jason Cottrell has lead the team as the head coach for 6 years, but has coached for 16 years overall. Cottrell shared why he decided to take the team down to Chattanooga.
“As we continue to grow the program, we are always looking for ways to benefit our players. Traveling south during spring break allowed us to get in four games that we would not have been able to do if we stayed home,” Cottrell said.
Cottrell described the competition at the tournament as some of the best they have seen in a long time. The team played teams from Alabama, Tennessee, Illinois and North Carolina. Cottrell commented on how the Chattanooga trip improved the team.
“We competed in each game, we gained experience and we were not stuck in a gym. We have continued to improve each game with our approach at the plate and our pitching,” Cottrell said.
Senior player and pitcher Cameron Maffei is one of the players that travelled to Chattanooga. Maffei discussed how the team competed in general.
“The team competed well as a whole, we played some very good competition and we competed in the games we played,” Maffei said.
Maffei explained where the team stayed when they were not playing games at the ballpark.
“The stay in the hotel was awesome, Coach Cottrell did a good job finding a nice hotel for the team and our family to stay in. Rooming with my teammates was one of the highlights of the trip in my opinion,” Maffei said.
Junior and third baseman Jared Baumgardner described what he believed was the best part of the trip.
“We got to play in warm weather against good teams to get us ready for the regular season. The best part was spending time with [my] teammates and bonding as a whole, so we play better together,” Baumgardner said.
The seniors for the 2016 season are Paul Molke, Justin Sampson, Tom Soukup, Tom Vlasek and Jacob Yost. The team ended with a record of 1-4 in the tournament in Chattanooga. The team finished with an overal record of 6-23, with a record of 2-10 in the Suburban League.
