Senior wrestler breaks school record, attributes success to dedication

Revere senior attributes his unprecedented success within the wrestling program to hard work, dedication, and the unrelenting support of his family and team mates.

Varsity wrestler Zeck Lehman recently broke the program’s record for all time wins, with one hundred and twenty eight in his career. This season, Lehman has won twenty two matches, only losing three.

Many different factors went into Lehman’s success, from his coaches to his work ethic.

Lehman partially attributes his success to his overall strategy or style as a wrestler.

“I’m a very patient wrestler. I wait for my opportunities in a match… I try not to go crazy. I’ll wait for the other wrestler to make a mistake, and then [I’ll] capitalize on it,” Lehman said.

Lehman described the method he utilized to achieve such an enormous amount of success with the wrestling program.

“It’s been a lot of hard work and dedication to my sport, I’ve also had a lot of great people around me, as far as coaches, and family members, not only pushing me but supporting me throughout my wrestling [career]. My coaches and my family, they’ve helped me through a lot… Coach Mosher is a great coach, as well as Matt Peterson, who has worked with me a lot with technique,” Lehman said.

Revere wrestling coach Dan Mosher elaborated on his part in helping Lehman break the all-time wins record and become the wrestler he is today.

“I share the same intensity and passion for the sport that [Lehman] has, and I think that he feeds off of my intensity and allows it to motivate him.  I try to push him both mentally and physically, and I have set high expectations for him to meet.  I think myself and the rest of our coaching staff has also been able to teach him some high level techniques to help him be successful against the best wrestlers,” Mosher said.

Mosher also explained what he sees in Lehman that sets him apart from other wrestlers and allows him to go the extra mile to get the win and beat his opponent.

“[Lehman]’s mentality towards the sport sets him apart from other wrestlers.  He is very intense and does not like to lose.  While other athletes accept defeat, Zeck does not.  He works very hard to better himself, and is a very physical wrestler… [Lehman] has put in a lot of hours in the practice room to improve his technique, strength, and conditioning.  He has been very committed to the sport, from maintaining his weight to working out in the weight room and practice room. A typical practice consists of 20 minutes of warm up drills, 40 minutes of technique drills, 30 minutes of live wrestling, and 30 minutes of conditioning,” Mosher said.

Revere freshman and Varsity wrestler Stefan Farian is a young member of the team who looks up to Lehman as a source of inspiration and a leader on the team.

“[Lehman] is very good at the sport. He is a great leader and an all-around team player. He always pushes us during practice to do our best, and we look up to him as a leader… He is a wrestler [who prefers to go on the offensive], who has a lot of great technique, and he knows how to get the pin quick,” Farian said.

The wrestling team has their next meet on Saturday, January 23rd against Padua Olmsted Falls, where Lehman hopes to improve his record.
