Women’s basketball team prepares for a successful season
The Revere Women’s basketball team is ready to win the Suburban League after participating in summer leagues and offseason weight lifting programs.
Revere Middle School Social Studies teacher and six-year basketball coach Kevin Verde talked about the team’s goals for the 2014-2015 season.
“Our goals this year are pretty easy, we want to reach our max potential . . . . We do not know how good we can be. We do not want to put a set goal [because] once that is reached we stop achieving. We want to achieve all year long. Goals that we would like to accomplish on the way to reaching our max potential are [to be] the Suburban League champs and the District champs,” Verde said.
Verde also discussed the team’s relatively young age, and how the team will function this year with only two seniors.
“This year’s team is full of young veterans. We have four juniors that have played since their freshman year and two sophomores that have played since their freshman year. By grade level we are still young, but by experience we have been tested. Our schedule will test our team in different ways than last years schedule. We will have a tough game every night,” Verde said.
Third year Varsity starter and junior Alyssa Nicholas talked about how this year’s team compares to teams from previous years.
“This year [the varsity team] has more experience with each other. We know how to play with each other and we are more prepared,” Nicholas said.
Nicholas named the captains for this year’s team.
“The captains are the two seniors, Natalie Lewis and Julie Garcia, Camryn Brown and Caitlin Vari,” Nicholas said.
Junior and shooting guard Abby Brock elaborated on the areas in which the team needs the most improvement.
“We need to improve on our communication during defense and basically just running more. I think our transition offense needs the most improvement; we can run a set but it’s hard to go from defense straight to offense,” Brock said.
Brock also shared her predictions for this year’s season.
“My predictions are that we will win the league and win districts. I think we have the talent. In the past, everybody has said we are young, but now we have finally grown up and so have our skills. I believe it’s the time for our team to make it to the next level,” Brock said.
Team captain and starting Varsity forward, Caitlin Vari explained how the team prepared for success in the upcoming season.
“The team prepared for this year during the offseason. We had summer leagues we played in together and we went to weightlifting and conditioning [sessions] during the fall to get stronger and faster. The first practice was on Halloween,” Vari said.
This year’s regular season is comprised of 22 games and lasts until mid February, when the state tournament begins and goes through the middle of March according to Vari.
The team lost their first game to Canton-McKinley High School with a score of 52-55 on November 29th. The girls play their next game at Jackson on December 23rd.
