Revere Cheer Squad Participates in State Competition

The Revere competition cheer squad worked towards a high placement at this year’s State competition by continuing to practice after the original competition date was postponed.

Hazardous weather conditions pushed the OASSA State Cheerleading and Dance Championships back from its original scheduled time on March 2 in Columbus, to March 16 at Bowling Green State University. Now with the extra time, the Revere competition cheer squad, whose seniors include Marissa Harbath, Madi Spector, Katie Mayer, Gabi Medvick, Angel Motz, Megan Rogerson, and Maria Sibbio, has been given the chance to continue practicing for the competition. With a squad that placed ninth at last year’s competition, this year’s team looks to improve upon their performance from 2013.

This particular cheer squad began practicing together at the beginning of the school year. Coach Kelly Staats elaborated on the time the team dedicated towards the state competition.

“The team started preparing for this event in late August,” Staats said.

Staats also mentioned what is necessary to be a part of the competition cheer squad.

“In order to be on the competition squad, girls must be a game day cheerleader for either football or basketball or both, possess tumbling skills and [have] good jumps and correct motion techniques,” Staats said.

Senior Marissa Harbath, who has been a part of the squad for all four years of high school, commented on her preparation towards this competition.

“I have prepared for the competition by focusing a lot at practice, especially because this competition will be my last,” Harbath said.

Madison Spector, a senior who has been with the squad for two years, discussed the group’s focus at the practices.

“[The team is] having practices twice a week. [I have been] practicing my tumbling as much as possible, and hope to land all of it [in competition]” Spector said.

The squad will travel to Bowling Green for the state competition, which will conclude the season, on March 16.
