Suburban League title in sight for softball team
With six seniors and returning underclass starters, the softball team has set high goals and looks to take a league and district title.
The six seniors include Nicole Heckman, Kaylyn Roose, Marissa Staats, Annie Taylor, Lauren Weidinger and Hailee Zendlo. The team returns four all-league players: Demi Boyazis, Roose, Staats and Zendlo. They are coached by Gina Hartranft, who has been with the program for three years. Last year’s squad went 15-12 overall and 9-7 in the Suburban League. Three year letterman, catcher, and University of Michigan-Dearborn commit, Roose, gave an overview of the team going into the season.
“The team is looking strong. We’ve put a lot of work in during the off season and I think it’s really going to pay off,” Roose said.
Roose has been on varsity since her freshman year, has earned first team all-league and all district honors, and is coming off a season where she hit a .411 batting average. After an over .500 season, Roose commented on how success from last year can carry over into this season.
“I definitely think this year’s team will continue the success from last year. I also think we will be better than last year as long as everybody comes into the season with the right attitude and willing to work hard every day,” Roose said.
Hartranft hopes the team will win more games than last year, win the league and win districts. She stated that the key league games on the schedule are Highland, Tallmadge, and Wadsworth. She also emphasized the team’s active offseason work.
“The team has been doing softball since June; we did workouts in the summer, we had open fields in the fall and they played in a winter league indoors. We also hit at least once a week, so they have been very active in the off season and have been working with a trainer from Force Sports on speed and agility,” Hartranft said.
Three year letterman and second baseman Staats spoke highly of her Revere softball career and hopes it will end on a high note.
“Our team has definitely gotten so much better over the years and this year could be the year we win [the league and more],” Staats said.
Hartranft described the team’s strengths.
“The biggest strengths will be working as a team and having the right attitude and give the best effort every day, all the time. I think we will be pretty solid defensively, and our hitting will be pretty powerful,” Hartranft said.
The softball team will open their season in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, over spring break at the Cal Ripken Experience.
