Rugby team prepares for successful season
The Revere rugby team worked through the winter months, preparing for what they hope will be a successful season, culminating in a playoff run.
The rugby team has already begun on practicing twice a week at Pinnacle Sports. While practice normally lasts two hours, it can vary based on what is being done that day.
Keith Bull has been coaching the team since 2006. Bull explained what they hope to accomplish as a team.
“If [the team trains] hard and work hard, I look for us to win the DII Northeastern Ohio championship,” Bull said.
Senior Nathan August has been on the team for four years. August described what they normally do at practice.
“Practice consists of breaking off into two groups (forwards and backs). Forwards do line in practice, scrums and rucks. The backs just run lines and plays we make up,” August said.
Senior Jack Nece, who has been on the team for two years, explained that the team is considered a club sport because the team has to pay for many of the necessities. Nece explained what also separates rugby from other sports.
“Rugby is a punishing sport played by some of the best guys I’ve ever known. It takes determination as well as a lack of fear. You know the hits are going to hurt, it’s just a matter of how much pain you can hand out yourself,” Nece said.
August also explained how he thinks rugby differs from other sports.
“What separates rugby from other sports is mostly mental. You need to be mentally prepared to enter a match and know you’re going to get hit. You just have to accept it and keep on trucking,” August said.
August and Nece both believe that this season will prove to be a good season based off of the players that they have. Nece spoke about the team’s goals has for the season.
“There’s only one goal and that’s to win. Our schedule looks very promising and we hope to go deep into the playoffs,” Nece said.
While the weather can sometimes make practices a challenge, Nece explained his favorite part about playing with the team.
“My favorite part of being on the rugby team is the camaraderie we share as a team. [It is] just a great group of guys to be on a team with,” Nece said.
Home games will take place at the Bath Rugby Field. Conditioning started in February and their first game will take place on March 30 at Brunswick.
