Boys’ tennis team returns with experience and leadership

The Revere High School boys’ tennis team is preparing for their upcoming season and events such as the Suburban League Tournament, the Medina Doubles Tournament and the Coaches Cup.

Coach Paul Fisher, who has coached boys’ tennis at Revere for five years, talked about how the team has prepared for their season.

“The boys have played on their own through fall and winter. We had a summer camp to teach younger kids where some of the players volunteered to help coach,” Fisher said.

Fisher also discussed his goals for this season.

“My goals for the season include winning the Suburban League and having some players return to the state tournament,” Fisher said.

Senior Noah Hendrickson, who placed highly in Suburban League his sophomore and junior years, mentioned what the team does at practice.

“We practice every day. At the practices, we do scrimmage matches and drills that help our game fundamentally. [Fisher] does a good job at dividing us up and improving everyone’s skills individually,” Hendrickson said.

Fisher touched on what he wants the team to take from their experience on the boys’ tennis team.

“I hope they learn to love tennis and get better at the game. I also hope they become more sportsmanlike,” Fisher said.

Kyle Gersman, another senior on the team, mentioned what he has taken from his four years of playing tennis at Revere.

“I learned what it takes to be a team player and a teammate. Tennis is a real mental game and this aspect taught me to keep my emotions in check,” Gersman said.

Gersman also acknowledged how he feels about the team chemistry this year.

“We have a solid group from last year that has good chemistry. I want to work on indoctrinating the newcomers and getting them into the loop as well,” Gersman said.

Fisher compared this year’s team to last year’s group.

“We lost a couple seniors and they will be hard to replace, but since we have good leadership, I think we will be strong this year,” Fisher said.

When asked about what matches he is looking forward to, Gersman mentioned the match against Copley.

“I look forward to facing Copley. Them being our biggest rival, I hope we come out on top this year,” Gersman said.

Some players on the team include Gersman, Hendrickson, Griffin Hansen, Matt Harris, Matt Fiedler, and Bharat Kumar.

The team’s first game will take place on Tuesday, April 1 at home against Jackson.
