Winter Sports Wrap-Up
The boys’ basketball team finished 9-14 overall, overcoming a number of obstacles throughout the season, including only playing one game with their whole roster; still, they managed to upset Green and Cuyahoga Falls, who were ranked in the area. Coach Rahas called this year’s team one of the most resilient he has worked with, as they continued to move forward after facing adversity. Senior Jordan Holtkamp will play in the Greater Akron Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game and was selected to the All-Academic team. Coach Rahas is very proud of the team, and he looks forward to a successful season next year.
The girls’ basketball team finished with a school record-breaking 21 wins and an overall record of 21-5. The team was the District Runner Up, and several players won individual awards. Caitlin Vari was selected WTCBCA Division II/III Underclassman of the year and the Division II All District first team; Camryn Brown was selected WTCBCA Division first team and for the Division II All District second team; and Marissa Harbath won a WTCBCA Honorable Mention and a Division II All District Special Mention. Sam Darwish, Perrine Furet, Ryan Gross, Sammi Mason, Luke Mierzejewski, Ben Mullaly, Joci Scott, Alexandria Shockey and Mariam Shockey qualified for Districts, which took place on February 14 at Cleveland State University. Sahan Kiridena came as an alternate for the boys 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relays. Almost everyone earned their personal best times again at the meet. Ben Mullaly and Sam Darwish came very close to qualifying for the State meet. Coach Pastva says she is looking forward to next season and is hoping to recruit some eighth graders from the middle school.
The wrestling team had six wrestlers qualify for the district wrestling tournament: Brody Muir-Johnson, Dustin Shaffer, Jack Smith, Zeck Lehman, Ahmad Khatib and Carl Roman. Khatib and Lehman each placed third at districts, qualifying them for the state tournament in Columbus. Both of them earned their 100th career high school victories in the process.
