Baseball team sets goals for upcoming season

The Revere baseball team looks to improve from last year’s injury-plagued season by dedicating off-season time to practice and fitness while also having many returning starters.

With its fourth year under head coach Jason Cottrell, the baseball program looks to improve from last year’s season, which had several key players injured. This year, they are focused on improving throughout the off-season. With three days a week devoted to lifting from October through January and a plyometric and conditioning program through February, Cottrell hopes to have everyone at full strength by the time the season starts.

Cottrell, who has been affiliated with coaching baseball altogether for fifteen years, talked about his goals for the team this year.

“We want to work hard every day to get better. We want to compete for the conference title and have a good run in the state playoffs,” Cottrell said.

Junior Dave Neale, who lettered both his freshman and sophomore year, discussed the topic of off-season work.

“For me personally, I have spent a lot of time in the weight room, mostly working on getting my legs and core stronger,” Neale said.

Cottrell also commented on the depth that the roster will have this year.

“Almost the entire varsity team will have at least one year of varsity experience, with most having two seasons of varsity baseball. Additionally, Sam Sustersic was first team all-league and Nolan Dyko was second team all-league. We should be much improved across the board,” Cottrell said.

Senior Ben Sass also discussed the number of returning players that will be on the team.

“With only losing one senior last year, we have the experience, so if we come to play every game, we will be looking better than ever,” Sass said.

The team continued its workouts and conditioning throughout February and ended the month with its tryouts, which started on February 24. The roster was finalized on March 6, and the team will first compete against Cuyahoga Falls on March 31.
