Seniors selected for Summit County All-Star Game
Three Revere senior football players got the chance to play in the Summit County All-Star game on Thanksgiving, with around ninety players being selected from around Summit county.
The game, called Thanks4giving, provides food to the Akron food bank through donations, and is an opportunity for seniors to cap off their high school careers. Everett McGregor, Carl Roman and Nathan August were selected to play in this year’s game for Revere.
Mike Murphey, head football coach, talked about what the Thanks4giving game means to senior football players.
“Historically, the Thanks4giving game is an all-star game for seniors from around Summit County and the Greater Akron City schools to compete and really showcase their skills,” Murphey said.
Phil Heyn, former varsity football coach, talked about how the players were selected.
“The players are submitted for selection by coaches or fans, [The selections] go to the committee who base it on talent as well as needs of the teams. If they need a certain position, a player is more likely to be selected in that particular position,” Heyn said.
The players selected played on either the East Side team or the West Side team, depending on where the school is located.
Everett McGregor, one of the selectees from Revere commented on how many players were picked for the game.
“There are around twenty-five offensive players on each team, with forty-five players on the West team and forty-seven on the East,” McGregor said.
Carl Roman, a defensive player selected for the game, talked about the coaches.
“Mike Laktash coached for the West’s team. He coaches for Akron North High School. Kevin Vaughn coached the East’s team. He coaches at Springfield High School,” Roman said.
Roman talked about how he felt honored being picked for such an important game, and honoring a great tradition.
“It is a definitely an honor to play in this game with the best of the best from Summit county. Following in the footsteps of great football players like Jake Totten, Joe D’Amico, and Paul Gabel, who were picked to play in last year’s game. We will be sure to represent Revere in the best way we can,” Roman said.
Everett McGregor was also honored to be selected, and could not wait to get on the field.
“It’s an honor to be selected, there are only so many people selected in the county, to be considered as one of the best athletes in the county is an honor, and something you work hard for your whole career,” McGregor said.
McGregor was excited about playing with new people on a different team.
“It will be cool to play with people from different schools, people we know on other teams. It will be a cool experience, and we get to meet new people,” McGregor said.
Roman was optimistic about playing with new people from different schools, and playing in the last game of his high school career.
“It’s going to be exciting. Playing with the best of Summit county will be a challenge but this could be the last time Everett, Nathan and myself put on football helmets so no matter what we’re going to make the best of it and leave it all out on the field,” Roman said.
The game was held on Thanksgiving day, 10:30 am, at St. Vincent – St. Mary High School Football Stadium, with the East team emerging victorious 21-13 over the West.
