Seniors propel wrestling team toward successful season
With one returning state qualifier and many district qualifiers, the wrestling team has set high expectations for themselves this season.
Going into his sixth year coaching, Revere High School math teacher Dan Mosher has confidence that his Revere wrestling team knows the discipline needed to wrestle. He feels they have recognized that their performance and work on the mat carries on to their work in the classroom. Mosher has been impressed by his wrestlers on the mat, as well as off the mat.
“They are hard workers…The one thing that I have always been impressed with is that off the mat, they seem to be good students and do what’s right in the classroom, which is more important than anything you do on the mat. On the mat, we just keep improving each year,” Mosher said.
The team consists of five seniors, including Ahmad Khatib, Hunter Krauth, Devin Rhodes, Carl Roman and Ben Sustersic. They have many juniors, including one state qualifier, Zeck Lehman, and district qualifier, Dustin Shaffer. The team voted on three captains, who are Khatib, Lehman, and Sustersic. Krauth commented on how he feels the team looks this season.
“I feel the team looks very good. Compared to last year, I’d say we have skill lost in some areas, but skill was gained in other areas,” Krauth said.
Mosher stated how the wrestlers were active in the off-season.
“Over the summer, we wrestled at the Kent State Team Camp. Many people went to camps… and tournaments [on their own],” Mosher said.
Mosher has a basis for what he hopes for the wrestlers to achieve.
“I would [like to have] five to six Suburban league placers, five to seven district qualifiers, two to three state qualifiers, and one state placer,” Mosher said.
Mosher evaluated the team, highlighting on the caliber in his weight classes.
“We look pretty solid at most weights. I would say our middle to light-upper weights look strong. I would say our light-light weights and our upper-upper weights are a little inexperienced and young. But I definitely expect our middle weights to carry us,” Mosher said.
Mosher said several wrestlers have a chance to qualify for state competition. Khatib talked about what he has done to try to accomplish his goal of qualifying for states.
“I have not stopped wrestling [and drilling]… I went to open mats at many schools close to here. I did not focus as much on weight training… I focused on wrestling and more cardio,” Khatib said.
Krauth mentioned how he has enjoyed his experience with the wrestling team and talked about how the team has bonded.
“It has been a very good experience. The bonds that you form [in wrestling] are stronger than any other sport because there are twenty kids going through the same thing that you are. [Wrestling] teaches you such good morals and values that other sports can’t teach,” Krauth said.
Over winter break, the wrestling team will be in action in the Canfield Duels, a dual meet, and the Hudson Duels.
