Lacrosse team looks to continue success
The Revere men’s lacrosse team feels prepared for the upcoming 2014 season after many morning practices and technique clinics.
Last year, the team’s record was 11-7, and they lost in the first round of the playoffs to Hoban High School. Nick Pappas, head coach of the men’s lacrosse team talked about what the team is hoping to accomplish during the upcoming season.
“Our team goals include winning playoff games, increasing participation numbers with the underclassmen, and to grow as a program,”
Pappas also commented on how his experience as a lacrosse coach differs from his other coaching jobs.
“This is my second season coaching the lacrosse team, and I would say the biggest difference is the number of coaches. In football, there are more coaches on the field, so athletes get more one on one instruction. In lacrosse, there are [only] 2-3 coaches for twenty-five kids,” Pappas said.
Jake Totten, Revere lacrosse alumnus and current assistant coach for the team, elaborated on what he hoped the team would be able to accomplish this season.
“I think we are going to have a winning season, and people are going to realize what Revere lacrosse is about,” Totten said.
Totten also mentioned the difference between coaching and competing on the field.
“Being on the field, you feel like part of the team; you want to compete and win… Being a coach is more off to the side, but lacrosse is my life, and I want to stay around the game, helping kids improve,” Totten said.
Christian Burlotos, one of the thirteen senior players on the team, explained the factors that separate lacrosse from other sports.
“Lacrosse is as fast as hockey, and it can change in seconds because the pace of the game is so fast. Lacrosse is also set apart because it requires athleticism, speed, strength, and skills,” Burlotos said.
Carl Roman, senior and team goalie, shared his best and worst experiences with Revere lacrosse.
“My best experience I’ve ever had was either our double overtime win against Benedictine last year or our 8-7 win over Brecksville after we got killed last year 15-4… My worst experience was losing to Hoban in the first round of playoffs nine to eight last year,” Roman said.
Roman clarified some of the winter preparation techniques players utilize to get ready for the upcoming season.
“The guys who don’t play a fall or winter sport have been lifting and doing combat circles before school. Practice started the twenty-fourth of February,” Roman said.
Burlotos commented on the excitement the game offers spectators.\
“Everyone should come out and watch, its going to be an exciting season. There is a lot of talent on the field,” Burlotos said.
The seniors on this year’s team are Dalton Bassak, Christian Burlotos, Jeff Carter, Jacob Essy, Jake Kasson, Joe Pearl, Evan Pinney, Carl Roman, Matt Sawka, Dillon Smith, David Suchy, Josh Wiseman and Ian Valentik. The team’s first game takes place March 31.
